Gear Talk: Guitar Picks

Guitar picks, what can I say??? I mean seriously what is it about these small triangle and tear drop shaped pieces of plastic?  When it comes to collecting picks, some people really do get rabid over them so let’s take a look…….

If I remember correctly, my pick collection started at Ozzfest 2007 after seeing Behemoth on the second stage. I remember walking to a shaded area at the San Bernardino venue and seeing these two guitar picks just in the grass and thinking “oh cool Behemoth has their own picks!!”  Shortly after that I made it a point to add to the collection.  There was a point in time where I would arrive to shows super early just to get a spot against the rail just to see if I could catch picks. For the most part that’s a sure fire way to catch them however, if you’re not a fan of the opener then you’re kind of stuck watching them. For the most part, bands usually throw picks after their set and they usually toss them to those against the rail. There is also the chance that the band you’re there to see may not throw anything at all and if you’re there to catch picks or set lists, then you sort of got there early for no reason.  Sometimes, bands will actually sell picks at their merch tables which is a great option for someone who doesn’t want to endure being against a rail all night. In fact that’s how I’ve been acquiring picks these days. Of course another way (and this is at really small club shows) is to find a tech and just ask them. For the most part, they usually have picks on them and if you are nice about it, they’ll give you one. Of course there are those bands that have a special pick made for each night of their tour such as Metallica. I’ve seen them post their setlists with the picks from that night of the tour and well when you’re Metallica you can do things like that.

Going back to Behemoth’s picks, that was actually how I first heard of Intune Guitar Picks and I must say, they make the absolute best guitar picks!!  I’ve been having picks of my own made since around 2007/08 and I must say their printing is the best in the market.  With Dunlop picks, the ink will smear after a couple of weeks but with Intune, the ink will last for months to even years!!  They pretty much make me whatever I want and are very reasonably priced. They make my Sinister Reviews picks and pick tins as well as Audioeclectica and Cobalt Presents picks (come find us at a show or even better come to a Cobalt Presents show and you’ll get one). So a HUGE shout out to Bert LeCato and all the great people at Intune Guitar Picks!! No this isn’t a paid ad for them but just an acknowledgment of a great company that makes a great product.  So what do you think?? Are you a pick collector and if so, how big is your collection?? At the end of the day, having picks from a band you love is a really cool item and a great way to remember that particular show. Also having your own custom picks is a great way to market yourself/band/brand. (Pictured in this article are a few from my personal collection)
