Gouge Away

If you’ve ever listened to the podcast (and if you haven’t, you should), then you’ve heard my cohost Brian talk about this band quite a bit. They are another female fronted band and I must say, after listening to their albums, they are quite energetic. The band on the chopping block is Gouge Away and this is another one of those bands that I don’t really know much about so let’s take a look………..

,Dies- OK so right out the gate this band just comes in guns blazing and quite honestly they don’t really let up until this album is over. It’s definitely got energy and aggression, which are both awesome and the singer has just got one hell of a voice!! Like seriously she’s a powerhouse of a singer!!  If you’re into bands like say Botch or even Converge, then you’re really gonna like this record. I’m gonna go ahead and give this 9/10.

Standouts: Calloused, Exhibit: Closed, Dirt Nap

Gouge Away On Audiotree Live- so Audiotree Live is an online live session which means that yes this is a live album however it’s just the band, crew, and interviewer.   The songs capture the same energy that was on the first one and I’m gonna go ahead and give this album 8.5/10.

Standouts: Dissociation, Fed Up, Ghost

Burnt Sugar- This album does sort of pick up where the first album left off, but at the same time, it does feel new and almost refreshing in an odd sort of way. Either way it’s a very worthy follow up. Musically it does seem like it’s a bit tighter almost more cohesive and I’m gonna go ahead and give this album 9/10

Standouts: Only Friend, Raw Blood, Can’t Relate

Deep Sage- the thing about this album is vocally it doesn’t stray too far away from what they were doing before but musically the songs are almost catchier and there’s bigger hooks. I feel like this is their most mature sounding record and certainly their most cohesive album yet.  One thing to note is that this was their first album after a 6 year break. This was one of those where I had to give it another listen but both times it was an awesome experience.  I’m gonna go ahead and give this one 10/10

Standouts: Stuck In A Dream, Overwatering, Spaced Out

This is a very fun band to listen to, and I’m willing to bet live, they’re even better.  As I said before, the singer has got one hell of a voice, and I honestly can’t say enough great things about it.  My guess is live their shows would be sort of reminiscent of bands like The Dillinger Escape plan.  What I like about this band is that you can feel the energy on every single one of their albums so this definitely makes me look forward to what they have to offer next.

Final Grade: A

Album Rankings:
