Song Pick Of The Week: Arch Enemy- The First Deadly Sin

OK, well it’s Friday so that means it’s time for another Song Pick Of The Week and since we are counting down to the number one band on my top 100 we’re gonna take a look at number 93 Arch Enemy. Now this band definitely has a bit of an interesting history as far as lineup changes go but one thing you cannot deny is that they were so much better when they had Angela as their front woman.  So with that, let’s take a look………

Song: The First Deadly Sin

Album: Wages Of Sin

Honestly, when I was trying to figure out which song to choose from, I was actually really really torn.  There are just so many great songs that they have with Angela fronting the band.  I mean, I could’ve picked something off of Doomsday Machine or even Anthems Of Rebellion. I could’ve gone in a completely different direction and picked something off of Khaos Legions but ultimately I wanted to go with a song from the first album that she ever sang on that being Wages Of Sin. There’s just a certain rawness and aggression with this album.  And again there’s so many great songs off of this album that I really had a tough time choosing.  Ultimately I went with the song The First Deadly Sin which is kind of a deep cut. I really wish they would bring this song back into the live set list because it is so bad ass like it’s one of those almost roller coaster type songs.  It just goes to show that there was a certain magic behind this album.  In fact, there was a magic behind this whole era.  Not to say that the new lineup or era of this band is bad or anything, but I really do miss this lineup. This album and the two albums after that really were just lightning in a bottle, but back to the song. It starts off with a really cool introduction and then there’s a slight pause before it goes right into one guitar playing, and then a few seconds later the other guitar starts, followed by the rest of the band and I freaking love that!!! I would also be remiss if I didn’t bring up the guitar solos.  What I really like about this band, especially their earlier works is how they do a lot of trade-offs for their guitar solos.  I think that’s what made this band special was when the two Amott brothers would just go back-and-forth and this song is definitely no exception.  This is absolutely one of the best songs off of this album and it is a shame that they don’t play it live anymore and in fact, it’s a shame they don’t play much of anything off of this album anymore. I get it you know you have to promote the new material but dammit play songs off this album especially this one!!  Either way check this song out if you’re into melodic Swedish death metal and while you’re at it, give the whole album a listen.
