However you feel about Megadeth whether you like them better than Metallica or you like them past a certain point, you cannot deny how great those first (at least) four albums are. I mean those albums are some of the finest thrash records ever and really prove why they are called state of the art speed metal. Now my favorite of the four is hands down Rust In Peace and in at 54 of my Top 100 for Song Pick Of The Week is the song “Five Magics.” Let’s take a look…..
Rust In Peace is definitely one of those albums that lived in my cd player back when I first heard it and if you haven’t listened to it then stop reading this and go do so. To me it’s right up there with albums like And Justice For All and Seasons In The Abyss. Of course picking a favorite song is no easy task as the whole album is a masterpiece in well……everything. However, Five Magics is definitely one of those songs that’s just absolutely perfect. That almost psychedelic guitar introduction from Marty Friedman followed by that really cool bass solo from David Ellefson is such a great way to start things off. Then once the rest of the song kicks in, it’s on!! Now of course, the song is one of the first to be based off a book that being the 1980 Lyndon Hardy novel Master Of The Five Magics which is about a young wizard who has to master said five magics. It’s a really cool concept as it is reflected in the lyrics which of course are about his journey and him using alchemy, sorcery, wizardry, and more in order to defeat an evil overlord. One thing I do have to say about Dave Mustaine’s lyrics is that sometimes they can tell a really cool and interesting story and “Five Magics” is a perfect example of such. What’s even better is that I was lucky enough to see them perform all of Rust In Peace five different times and every time it was great!!
