Slipknot (Rewind Review Edition)

In continuing with the rewind reviews, I thought I’d go back and give Slipknot an update. Now I do know they did put out an album after I reviewed them so let’s see if anything has changed…..

Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat- so going back I forgot how weird and out there this record is. I can see they replaced their origins singer and decided to go in a different direction. Honestly, check this out if you are curious but I would skip this one.

Previous Score: 8/10

New Score: 3/10

Standouts: Confessions

Slipknot- ok so here we are. The one that REALLY started it all. I was lucky enough to see them play this album twice live and it really makes you appreciate this album a lot more. This is such a raw, angry album and it’s absolutely badass!! Definitely essential listening

Previous Score: 9/10

New Score: 10/10

Standouts: Liberate, Only One, Eeyore

Iowa- again another classic album and this one is practically a death metal album. While not as raw, it’s still got that anger and emotion. Could be that they all hated each other during the making it but the end result is a great album. I go back and forth as to which I like better this one or the last one. Either way, this is an absolute Disasterpiece and needs to be another essential listening!!

Previous Score: 9.5/10

New Score: 10/10

Standouts: Left Behind, Metabolic, My Plague

Volume 3: The Subliminal Verses- so this is the one that made me really take this band seriously. Sure I had heard a few of their popular songs but this is the one that made me a fan of this band. It’s not quite as angry but where it lacks in anger, you get some of their best songwriting. It’s got a little bit of everything from the usual harder stuff to some softer songs. It’s probably their most diverse album and also has my favorite Slipknot song of all time that being Welcome.

Previous Score: 10/10

New Score: 10/10

Standouts: Welcome, Pulse Of The Maggots, Scream

All Hope Is Gone- going back to this one, I remember I absolutely hated this album. But now, it’s actually not that bad. It’s a different record that’s for sure and you can absolutely tell that there was group A and group B when it came to writing. The end result is a very uneven record but musically it’s actually not bad. The softer stuff I am not a fan of like the song Dead Memories or even the song Snuff. To me, they didn’t really do it for me and yes I am aware that people love those songs. Not much else to say about this one except you can tell that this really was the beginning of the end for this lineup.

Previous Score: 1/10

New Score: 7.5/10

Standouts: Gematria, Vendetta, This Cold Black

.5: The Gray Chapter- this one kind of has almost a Vol. 3 feel to it and I actually really enjoyed this one. This one also doesn’t feel disjointed or experimental like the previous album was. To me, this could be one of their most overlooked albums.

Previous Score: 9/10

New Score: 9/10

Standouts: The Negative One, Nomadic, Sarcastrophe

We Are Not Your Kind- I don’t wanna say that this one feels like a repeat of All Hope Is Gone, but this one feels very uneven to me. This is a very experimental sounding record especially the back half of it. I don’t remember this one being this weird and uneven but it does make for a very interesting record. Overall, this one is worth a listen even if it’s not as good as their previous albums.

Previous Score: 7/10

New Score: 7.5/10

Standouts: Spiders, Orphan, Nero Forte

The End, So Far- I gotta be honest, I hadn’t really heard anything off this record. I had read reviews where people were saying that this wasn’t a very good album so I didn’t really bother. After listening to it, I have to say that it’s actually not that bad. Sure it’s not self titled or Iowa but I say give this one a chance. It does at times slow things down but then again that is pretty common with this band. I am more of a fan of the faster songs on this one but again give this album a listen with an open mind and you’ll probably enjoy it. I’ll give this one 8/10

Standouts: Warranty, H377, The Chapeltown Rag

I don’t wanna say that their albums are inconsistent but there are definitely some that are better than others. Yes it would be nice if they could keep writing albums like Iowa or Vol. 3 but those days are over and well if you weren’t around or didn’t pay attention then that’s on you. Personally between this rewind review and seeing them the last couple times, I am very much looking forward to their next album and seeing them live again.
