Mountain

Up next on the chopping block is the band Mountain. Mountain is one of those bands that is known for pretty much one song so I’m curious as to see how the rest of the albums are. Let’s take a look……..

Climbing!- So this is the album that gave us the song “Mississippi Queen” and wow that song is a classic, the album is pretty damn solid. It’s definitely one of those definitive 70’s sounding albums and I’ll give it 9/10

Standouts: Silver Paper, The Laird, Never In My Life

Nantucket Sleighride- I do have to say I actually enjoyed this one a lot more the second time I heard it. It definitely feels like one of those albums that picks up where the last one left off, but maybe not as memorable.  Overall, it’s a fine record and a pretty decent follow up and I will give it 8/10

Standouts:  Don’t Look Around, The Animal Trainer And The Toad, You Can’t Get Away

Flowers Of Evil- this is an interesting one because it’s part studio album and part live material. Again the studio material is fine and just has that classic 70s rock sound.   The live songs sound ok but aren’t anything special. I’ll give this 8/10

Standouts: Flowers Of Evil, Crossroader, Pride And Passion

Avalanche- again kind of more of the same here but that necessarily isn’t a bad thing. It seems like with these 70s albums they’ve kind of stuck to a formula which, as I said is not a bad thing but if you’re expecting anything new or exciting you’re not gonna get it. Again this album is fine and I’ll give it 8/10.

Standouts: Sister Justice, Swamp Boy, You Better Believe It

Go For Your Life- while I do respect the fact that they were trying to go with what the sound was in the 80’s, this album is kind of forgettable. It’s not a full on hard rock album and some of the songs are kind of ballad-y. Again this one is just ok and I’ll give it 7/10

Standouts: Hard Times, Spark, Babe In The Mountain

Man’s World- this one starts off as a hard rock album, but then goes into a more softer sound. I don’t know this is their first and only album of the 90’s and I have to say it’s a very forgettable record. At some point, the songs just get softer and softer, and I found it to be a very boring record.  I really wanted to like this one more but I couldn’t. I’ll give it 6/10

Standouts: In Your Face, Thunder

Mystic Fire- again much like the last album, it’s just very forgettable. The songs get boring and I kept waiting for this album to end. Overall, not that great and I’ll give it 5/10

Standouts:

Masters Of War- it seems like they’re trying to go back to their earlier sound.  The opening song “Masters Of War” features guest vocals from Ozzy Osbourne and it’s actually pretty good. The rest of the album is definitely a step up from what they were doing before and I would say it’s a decent final album.  I’ll give it 7.5/10.

Standouts: Masters Of War, Highway 61 Revisited, Seven Days

It is too bad that this band is a one hit wonder band, but one cannot deny how big of a classic “Mississippi Queen” is. It is kind of too bad that this band didn’t really make it as big like their peers but the first couple of records are pretty damn good.  If they were still around, I would definitely check them out live but sadly, Leslie West is no longer with us.  RIP Leslie West
