Alright so after that last review I definitely need to do another death metal review and this is one of those bands that you may or may not have heard of/listened to. So the band up on the chopping block is Lock Up and so you have members from Napalm Death, At The Gates, Criminal, Hypocrisy, Brutal Truth, and Dimmu Borgir. So let’s take a look………
Pleasures Pave Sewers- alright so some would say that this is a grindcore record but I don’t agree. This is very much a death metal record. This is also the first and only record that has Peter Tägtgren (Hypocrisy) on vocals. A fun fact about this record is that it was recorded in one day which is pretty impressive. Now yes some would say this is a bunch of noise but do keep in mind that this is a side project of Shane Embury (Napalm Death). So that being said, I’ll give this 8/10
Standouts: Pretenders Of The Throne, Triple Six Suck Angels, Tragic Faith
Hate Breeds Suffering- I don’t know how I’d describe the recording on this one. I guess the last one it sounded fuller? Anyway, this is the first record to have vocalist Tomas Lindberg (At The Gates) on vocals and he definitely brings that At The Gates feel to it. I’ll give this one 8/10
Standouts: Violent Reprisal, The Jesus Virus, Detestation
Necropolis Transparent- there is just something about Tomas Lindberg’s vocals that are just so unique. On here, the band seems to be more cohesive and focused. Like this sounds like it should’ve come after Slaughter of The Soul or even Crowned In Terror. Definitely check this one out. I’ll give it 9/10
Standouts: Parasite Drama, Infiltrate And Destroy, Life Of Devastation
Demonization- so for this one, we get Kevin Sharp (Brutal Truth) on vocals and this one has the most grindcore feel to it. His vocals are cleaner and you can understand them more than Tomas’s. I think if you like a band like Converge you might actually like this one. This one has a little bit of their earlier sound put back in mixed with how they sound now. It’s definitely the most death and grind sounding record of the bunch. 9/10
Standouts: Blood and Emptiness, Sunk, Locust
The Dregs Of Hades- so for this one we have Tomas back on vocals and I was actually surprised this came out last year. I thought that maybe this band was done after only a couple albums. I actually prefer his vocal sound on his earlier records with any of his bands. Maybe there’s effects used I don’t know. Anyway, the riffs are awesome and the drum work is fantastic. This is one of those records I would recommend to anyone who appreciates underground death metal. 9/10
Standouts: The Dregs Of Hades, Dead Legions, Ashes
I’m definitely glad I checked these guys out and for years I had only heard of them. If you are a fan of death/grind, give these albums a listen. Hopefully these guys will do some shows in the near future but given that they’re all in more popular bands, that seems highly unlikely. Oh well one can hope.
