So if anybody looks at or follows metal fan sites such as Blabbermouth, Metal Injection, etc. you’ll know that they will post things like how much people don’t like St. Anger, what a certain musician thinks of a certain album, and so on and so forth. While browsing through Facebook one morning I came across an article about the Slayer album Diabolus In Musica and it got me thinking is it really that bad or is it just misunderstood? With that let’s take a look………
Let’s be honest here when it comes to a band like Slayer, you know exactly what you’re going to get. I mean Slayer was and will always be Slayer but that’s what makes them great. Now I know when it comes to this band, the general consensus is that Reign In Blood, South Of Heaven, and Seasons In The Abyss are the fan favorites and for good reason. But if you ask me as much as I like those albums, I personally tend to prefer their material. After all my favorite album is the extremely underrated Divine Intervention but I also really really like Diabolus. I think out of all of their albums it’s certainly their most experimental as far as Slayer is concerned. I don’t understand why Kerry King shits on this album so much. Yeah I get it. He wasn’t really inspired by anything that was going on at the time, but that said it’s still very much a Slayer sounding album. Just listen to the opening song Bitter Peace. That sounds like it could be on any other Slayer record. Another example is the closing song Point. Again another very Slayer sounding song. One thing that I really really like about this album is that you can actually hear Tom’s bass. You don’t hear that a lot or at least it’s not very noticeable on pretty much any of their other albums. So really aside from maybe a few tracks if it doesn’t feel like it’s that far off the beaten path. It’s got the aggression. It’s got the attitude and of course it’s got the anti-religious material. All things that make this band who they are and to be honest, I wish that they would play more songs from this album, live. The way I see it if you took the time and energy and effort to write and record these songs, then play them!!! So as I’ve said in many of my reviews, if it’s been a while since you’ve listened to this album, do yourself a favor and give it a spin. Try to go into it with an open mind and remember it’s FUCKING SLAYER!!!!!!!
