New Albums In 2026: Social Distortion-Born To Kill

Social Distortion is one of those punk bands where you know exactly what you’re getting.  They’re one of those bands where there’s no BS and at this point, they’ve cemented themselves as one of those legacy acts (in the punk scene at least). On May 8, 2026, after 15 years, we finally got a new album from Social Distortion. It’s called Born To Kill so let’s take a look…..

If you think about it, this band has been around since 1978 and the fact that they’re still putting out new music in 2026 is actually quite impressive.  Now as I said before, this would be their first new album in 15 years so that begs the question, why wait so long?  It’s not as if they broke up or anything and in fact, this record was started as far back as 2013.  So why the wait?  The answer is because according to Mike Ness, “I have to write the record of my career right now.  That’s the pressure I put on myself.”   In January of 2018, Ness offered this update “I’ve put a few new songs in the set just to let people know that we’re not sitting on our asses at home. It gets people talking, which is nice. But yeah, once we stop touring in November, we’ll be ready. I’m thinking that by January we’ll be pre-production, but I don’t want to rush something out just to get it out.”

More songs were written and eventually they had enough for two albums and the goal was to have a new album out in 2023 but then Mike Ness was diagnosed with tonsil cancer which delayed the album even further.  But now in 2026, we finally have a new album and how is it??  After all these years, production, writing, cancer diagnosis, all that?? Well it’s……..fine.  It doesn’t exactly reinvent the wheel or blow your mind but it’s just that.  It’s fine for a Social Distortion album. It doesn’t pick up where they left off and if I’m being honest, it’s just ok. I know that hardcore fans of this band will probably love it and some might even think that it’s the best they’ve put out.  The singles are good but it isn’t anything I haven’t heard before.  Fun fact, the songs “No Way Out” and “Don’t Keep Me Hanging On” both originated from the album White Light, White Heat, White Trash.  I’ll give this album 7/10

Standouts: No Way Out, Walk Away(Don’t Look Back), Over You
