The Misfits

For this review I decided to put a punk band on the chopping block. Now what’s something that I love just as much as punk and metal if not more? Horror movies. Which means that it’s time for The Misfits. Now I’ve only heard a couple of their albums so this should be a lot of fun. Let’s take a look……….

Walk Among Us- so this one is one that I had not heard until this review and I must say for a debut album it doesn’t sound too bad. I will say that the nice thing about this album and pretty much all their albums is that the songs are really short like a minute and a half short. Anyway, it’s a solid album and I give it an 8/10

Standouts: I Turned Into A Martian, Night Of The Living Dead, 20 Eyes

Earth A.D.- so this is the first album I bought from these guys. I remember driving to Salzers in Ventura to get it and I would say that if you are going to start with a Danzig era Misfits this might be the one to start with. I feel like with this one, the songs are sped up a little more and this one kinda sounds more raw that the previous album but it’s definitely more listenable than other earlier punk bands. Honestly I think it’s Glenn Danzig’s voice that helps a lot. Definitely a classic album and it gets 9/10

Standouts: Devilock, Bloodfeast, Green Hell

Static Age- technically this is the first album recorded by The Misfits as it was recorded in 1978 but it wasn’t officially released in it’s entirety until 1996 for some odd reason. Anyway, I actually really like this album. It sounds better than the previous two. Now that might be because it was released later so it is probably remastered. To me the songs just seem to be a bit more catchier. I had a lot of fun listening to this album and this might be my favorite of the Glenn Danzig era. This would also be the last released album with Glenn Danzig. This definitely gets a 10/10

Standouts:  Hybrid Moments, Some Kinda Hate, Return Of The Fly

American Psycho- ok so now we are in the Michale Graves era and if you are expecting me to trash this era of The Misfits then you will be disappointed because I love this era. This is where the band delves into punk and metal territory.  Now don’t get me wrong, Glenn Danzig is a great singer but Michale Graves is just more aggressive and the band is actually heavier. I mean on some songs, we get thrash elements. It’s great. This is a fun album and it gets 9.5/10

Standouts: American Psycho, Walk Among Us, The Haunting

Famous Monsters- ok so usually I have a hard time deciding between this album or the last one but ultimately I prefer this one. It actually feels like a continuation of American Psycho. The band still has that heaviness and this album feels a bit more cohesive. I feel like this album and the last one always tend to get overlooked in favor of the Danzig era albums. Honestly though you should check out both if you haven’t yet. Both are solid album. It’s really too bad that this is the last Michale Graves album. This definitely gets a 10/10

Standouts: Dust To Dust, Pumpkinhead, Fiend Club

Project 1950- ah yes an obligatory covers album however, this one is songs from the 50’s and 60’s. It is also the first one with bassist Jerry Only on vocals and you know what he actually does a pretty good job. This album is a lot of fun and if you want to hear punk versions of oldie songs then definitely check this album out. I give this 8/10

Standouts: This Magic Moment, Dream Lover, Runaway

The Devil’s Rain- alright so this is the second album with Jerry Only on vocals and I gotta say this one is not as strong as 1950. I don’t know this one is kinda blah to me. Like it’s a good effort but it falls flat. The songs aren’t as catchy and I was just bored with this one. I give this 7/10

Standouts: Vivid Red, Father, Ghost Of Frankenstein

Friday The 13th- I had to do this one. This one is an EP but I mean the crimson ghost logo is made to look like it’s wearing a hockey mask like Jason Voorhees. This is another one with Jerry Only on vocals and this is just a fun little EP. I mean you have a song all about Jason and one that’s all about Freddy Krueger. The other two songs are just ok. Definitely worth a listen. I give it 8/10

Standouts: Friday The 13th, Nightmare On Elm Street

This is probably one of the quickest reviews I’ve done in awhile. I guess having the songs at like a minute and a half helps but this was a ton of fun. Seeing these guys live is also a lot of fun and definitely recommend checking them out if they ever tour again. I do wish when I saw them they played stuff from the Michale Graves era.
