Was anybody lucky enough to go to the Extreme Steel Tour featuring Pantera, Slayer, Morbid Angel, Static-X, and Skrape?? Was anyone lucky enough to go to the February 22, 2001 Illinois date? If so, then you probably remember That One Time Phil Anselmo (Pantera) jumped on stage with Morbid Angel. If not, let’s take a look……….
You know one of the many things that I like about Pantera is (aside from all the obvious things like the Abbott brothers) that they took out extreme metal bands on tour. Let’s be honest they really did fly the flag for American heavy metal in the 90s until their breakup in 2003. Anybody that knows anything about Phil Anselmo knows that he is a fan of death metal so I think it’s awesome that he got on stage for the song “Day Of Suffering.” Now for those that aren’t too familiar with Morbid Angel, they are considered one of the pioneers of American death metal (alongside Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Incantation, and Death). Morbid Angel is one of my favorite death metal bands and having Phil sing a song with them makes it that much more awesome!! The song “Day Of Suffering” is off their second album Blessed Are The Sick and is considered one of their classics. Now the footage I was able to find on YouTube isn’t the greatest but keep in mind this was pre-social media. I love that Pantera took these kinds of bands on tour so definitely check out the Blessed Are The Sick album because it is so damn good!!
