Song Pick Of The Week: The Pretty Reckless- Going To Hell

For years I held off on listening to The Pretty Reckless. I’m sure I’m not the only one that thought “how serious can this band be?  The singer is from Gossip Girl and How The Grinch Stole Christmas.”  But once you look past that and really listen to their albums, you will hear some great music.  Of course they definitely deserve to make it on my top 100 and in at 59 is the song “Going To Hell” for Song Pick Of The Week.  Let’s take a look….

This is absolutely one of those songs that just goes for it and what a jam this is!!  For four and a half minutes, this song doesn’t let up and it’s one of those songs that’s perfect from start to finish. Now this band has a good amount of songs from mid-tempo to the ballad-y but it’s their full on rock songs that are their best and “Going To Hell” is a perfect example of such. It starts off with Taylor Momsen quietly saying “Don’t Bless Me Father For I Have Sinned” before going right into it.  Now the song itself is about exploration of human flaws, personal accountability, and the rejection of rigid religious guilt.  Taylor Momsen goes onto say that the song “addresses personal sins and the collective missteps of the human race, accepting responsibility rather than pretending to be pure.”  It’s no wonder as to why it’s considered a Pretty Reckless classic and it’s also one of those songs that’s perfect live.
