Metal and Country….two complete opposites however if there was ever a proper way for both of these genres to come together, I honestly can’t think of two perfect icons like Dolly Parton and Rob Halford to do it with the song “Bygones.” Let’s take a look….
I remember reading about a collaboration with Dolly Parton and Rob Halford when this first came out on Loudwire and I thought to myself “Dolly Parton and Rob Halford now that is a strange mix.” While it may seem unlikely for these two artists to do any sort of collaboration, it actually works very very well!! “Bygones” is one of those songs that you could actually see being on a Judas Priest album. There is that classic Judas Priest sound, and having Dolly Parton‘s southern voice complementing Rob Halford’s vocals really brings everything together. The song itself is about acknowledging one’s mistakes while pointing out that the other person isn’t completely blameless.
Of course, having John 5 on guitar and Nikki Sixx on bass doesn’t hurt either and when asked by Eddie Trunk jokingly if she would do a metal record and how this collaboration came to be, Dolly said “I don’t think so.” Trunk then said, “You came close on that [song],” to which she replied: “Did I? I didn’t realize, but I did love Rob Halford. We got to talk a lot ’cause he went in the [Rock And Roll] Hall Of Fame when I did. And so I got to visit a lot of these people that are on the record … that were put in the Hall Of Fame at the same time I was. And so when I talked to Rob, I asked him if he would be willing to sing on my record if I called on him. He said, ‘I sure would, ’cause my mom, my grandma, my kids, we’ve all loved you through the years.”
The song “Bygones” is off of Dolly Parton’s 49th and final studio album which I didn’t realize she had that many albums!! it really is a good song and both of their voices complement each other so well. I highly recommend you give this song a listen because at the end of the day it’s just a great song. Whether you’re a fan of Rob Halford, Dolly Parton, or even Judas Priest, I think you’ll enjoy this song!!
