I have to admit, as time has gone on, I have become less and less of a fan of the Foo Fighters. That’s not to say that I think they are a bad band or anything like that. No the biggest reason is because they just have become kind of boring to me. That said, there are still a couple of songs that I do like and one of those is “The Pretender.” However, one of my favorite bands The Warning covered that song very very early on. Let’s take a look…
Up first is the original and it’s just one of those songs that’s simple, fun, and sounds good live. Originally, during the Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace preproduction, it was called Silver Heart. Dave Grohl has also said that the Sesame Street song “One of These Things (Is Not Like the Others)” may have played a part in influencing the writing of the song. When it comes to the meaning of the song, Dave has said that it has to do with political unrest. He also goes on to say “That’s the thing with lyrics, you never want to give away specifics, because it’s nice for people to have their own idea or interpretation of the song. But, you know, everyone’s been fucked over before and I think a lot of people feel fucked over right now and they’re not getting what they were promised, and so something to do with that.” There’s a reason why this is considered a Foo Fighters classic and it’s no wonder that this is a live staple.
Now we get to The Warning’s version. Ah yes the three sisters from Monterrey Mexico Dany (guitar/voice), Pau (drums/voice), and Ale (bass/backing vocals). When they covered this, they were really young and by really young I mean 15, 13, and 11. In fact this cover was put out before their first EP and album! What also makes this cover even more impressive is that it’s just the three of them whereas The Foo Fighters have four members including another guitar player. I do have to say that a major highlight is Pau’s drumming which (at that time) could have easily given Taylor Hawkins (RIP) a run for his money. It’s really neat to see them playing this song knowing what we know now about this band. I also have to add that The Warning would eventually open for The Foo Fighters in 2022 which makes this a bit of a full circle moment.
So the question is which do you prefer?? Do you prefer the original?? Do you prefer The Warning’s version?? Did you even know about The Warning’s version?? Or do you like both??
Winner: The Warning
