There’s really nothing quite like a great opening track to really set the tone of a record. In fact, much like a good closing song, the opener needs to be slightly better. Now it’s been a good while since I’ve gone down a Slayer rabbit hole so let’s take a look…….
One of the many things I love about Slayer is that they are able to combine punk and thrash metal perfectly. An example of this would be their opening song on the Divine Intervention album “Killing Fields.” I mean come on talk about chaos right out the gate and that chunky, heavy guitar tone!! That drum intro is just so damn good and it really does emphasize that they’re not slowing down. “Killing Fields” is short but sweet yet pummels you the entire almost four minutes. Now I’m sure the fan favorite opening song is probably “Angel Of Death” or “South Of Heaven” but give the song “Killing Fields” a listen and you might have a different favorite. Now this is also the first album without Dave Lombardo, and to be quite honest Paul Bostaph really does have the chops and does a fantastic job.
