Up next is a band that has been around for awhile but I’m just discovering them now. Some would say that the next band on the chopping block is “Mastodon lite.” The band on the chopping block is the band Baroness and I’ve only heard of them so let’s take a look………..
First/Second- so it looks like we’re starting off with a EP. Actually it’s two EP’s. Here we get some awesome guitar riffing and while the vocals aren’t anything to write home about, it’s a great start. I’ll give this 9/10
Standouts: Tower Falls, Rise, Son Of Sun
A Grey Sigh In A Flower Husk- so this is another EP but this is actually a split EP with a band called Unpersons. This one feels all over the place at times and I’d say it’s good but not great. I’ll give this one 8/10
Standouts: Dry Hand, Teriesias
Red- as I said in the intro, some would say that this band would be Mastodon lite and well they do sound like Mastodon on this record. Luckily, I love Mastodon so I don’t see this as a negative. This is a fantastic album and the guitar work and riffs are freaking awesome. Im definitely giving this one 10/10
Standouts: Rays On Pinion, Isak, Teeth Of A Cogwheel
Blue- damn these guys and the riffs. If you enjoyed Red, then you will definitely enjoy this one. This is a fantastic follow up and even though they still kinda sound like Mastodon, (if you can get past the comparison), then you are in for a great listen. Much like on Red, the riffage and guitar work are absolutely badass. The only thing I’ll say is that some of the songs aren’t quite as good on this as they are on Red. I’ll again give this one 10/10
Standouts: A Horse Called Golgotha, The Sweetest Curse, O’er Hell And Hide
Yellow & Green- so this one I feel like they slow it down. I feel like they’ve kinda found their sound so to speak. Even though this is a slower album and it clocks in at 1 hr 15 minutes but that’s because it’s a double album. And honestly, it doesn’t feel like a long album and that’s rare. Im giving this one 9/10
Standouts: Cocainium, Little Things, Board Up The House, The Line Between
Purple- I’m not sure what it is about albums called Purple that are just great (see STP’s album Purple) but this one brings back the badass riffing. To me this band is at their best when they have songs with the hooks and badass riffing and you get that a lot on this record. I hat to be repetitive here but I’m giving this one 10/10
Standouts: The Iron Bell, Morningstar, Desperation Burns
Gold & Grey- another double album and like the last double album they did, this one does not drag. This is also the first to feature new guitarist Gina Gleason and she is amazing (seriously look her up on YouTube). The riffing is still strong on here and this one also reminds me a lot of Yellow & Green but slightly better. Anyway, I’ll give this one 9.5/10
Standouts: Throw Me An Anchor, Front Toward Enemy, Broken Halo
This is an awesome band and I definitely recommend checking these guys out especially if you are a fan of badass riffing. Yes they do kinda sound like Mastodon but they’re also their own thing too. All I know is that now I really want to see them live and ranking these albums is gonna be a challenge.
