Ok so after the last review it’s time to dive into some metalcore. Some 2000’s metalcore to be exact. The band on the chopping block is the band Poison The Well and it’s been a long time since I’ve heard any of their music so this will be a fun one. Let’s take a look………………..
The Opposite Of December…..A Season Of Separation- ok so I can’t even remember when the last time I heard anything from this record. Anyway, this isn’t that different from the other debut metalcore records that came out during that time. It’s got those hardcore growls and a little bit of clean singing which does make it somewhat unique. Not a bad way to start. 8/10
Standouts: 12/23/93, Nerdy, Not Within Arms Length
Tear From The Red- to me the vocalist sometimes sounds a little like Page Hamilton and the album has kind of a Deftones feel to it. And by Deftones, I mean that in a good way. This was the album that I first heard from them because I think there were kids in one of my classes that was always talking about this album and this band. Anyway, this really is a great album and a good starting point. I’ll give it 9/10
Standouts: Botchla, Rings From Corona, Sticks And Stones Never Made Sense
You Come Before Us- this one I feel like is more on the cleaner vocal side. It’s definitely got a lot more clean singing and you can’t tell they are trying new things. It’s certainly slower than the last two albums. As a whole, it’s fine so I’ll give it 9/10
Standouts: Ghostchant, Pleasant Bullet, Zombies Are Good For Your Health
Versions- I feel like here they decided to go into a more experimental direction. Now that can either work or not but here it works but it just doesn’t feel like a Poison The Well record. I do think it’s interesting when bands try things like this but let’s hope it doesn’t carry over into the next record. Although I’m sure live these songs would sound great. I’ll give this 6/10
Standouts: Letter Thing, Pleading Post, Naive Monarch
The Tropic Rot- with this one I feel like they’re trying to go back to their sound a couple albums ago but something seems to be missing. I’m not quite sure exactly what but there is something lacking. I’m hoping they didn’t lose their edge after Versions but this album isn’t a bad album but it’s just ok. I’ll give it 3/10
Standouts: Exist Underground, Cinema, Antartica Inside Me
This was certainly a fun deep dive and now I wish I could go back in time and go to festivals like Warped Tour and see bands like these guys again. I think the last time I saw them was in like 2007 with Shadows Fall and they were a lot of fun.
