Thrice

Alright so the next band on the chopping block is a band that has been requested numerous times. I’ve been on the fence because I haven’t really heard much of them but kind of considered them to be on the emo side of things. The band I’m talking about is the band Thrice. Now I haven’t really heard anything or at least I don’t remember any of their music which is weird because I saw them at KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas in 2005. So we’ll see how this one goes. Let’s take a look……….

Identity Crisis- you know what? This album actually isn’t too bad. It actually has a decent rock almost pop punk sound going for it. I can see how some would think that this is an emo record due to the way the vocalist sings the songs but overall a decent start. I’ll give this one 8/10

Standouts: To What End, Identity Crisis, Unquestioned Answers

The Illusion Of Safety- so this one still has that pop punk sound with some hardcore screams. I will say that one thing I actually enjoyed were the guitar parts. They’re pretty good and simple. I’ll give this one 8/10

Standouts: Kill Me Quickly, Deadbolt, Where Idols Once Stood

The Artist In The Ambulance-  so on here they go for more of a post-hardcore sound.  Now there are a couple of skipable moments but there aren’t a huge amount of them. Now I do remember reading a review where someone said that they sound like a mixture of Face To Face, Metallica, and Thursday. Thursday yes. But Face To Face and Metallica? That right there is such an idiotic statement! Anyway, I’ll give this one 8.5/10

Standouts: Blood Clots And Black Holes, Cold Cash And Cold Hearts, All That’s Left

Vheissu- so this one is definitely different. It doesn’t sound so much like a hardcore (although there are bits of it throughout) or pop punk album but it’s definitely more experimental. It’s certainly softer than their other records. I do know that this is supposed to be the fan favorite record but I just couldn’t get into it. To me it has some good moments but overall, I just found it to be kind of boring. I’ll give it 6/10

Standouts: Stand And Feel Your Worth, The Earth Will Shake

The Alchemy Index Vols. 1 & 2: Fire And Water- so this is part of a four part concept album which judging by the name is about the four elements. Now at first one would think that it’s going to be a long album but it isn’t really. This one has some ok tracks and some boring tracks. It’s not my first choice for this band but it’s not the worst thing I’ve ever heard. I’ll give it 6/10

Standouts: The Messenger, Burn The Fleet

The Alchemy Index Vols. 3 & 4: Air & Earth- so this one is obviously the last of the concept albums but I found this one to be kind of boring. I don’t know there are just way too many acoustic type songs which I guess is fitting for a double concept album based on earth and air. Some may like this one but I didn’t. 1/10

Standouts:

Beggars- I don’t know but this album seemed to drag for me in a lot of places. It’s not nearly as bad as the last record and the band sounds pretty good. For some reason I just couldn’t get into it that much. It does go from soft to not so soft. I’ll give this one 2/10

Standouts:

Major/Minor- I actually liked this one better than the last couple,e records. It’s not a pop punk record or a post hardcore record but it’s a simp,e rock record. Is it anything special or mind blowing? No not really but it’s a decent listen. I’ll give this 7/10

Standouts: Yellow Belly, Blinded, Cataracts

To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere- again, this one is just average. For the most part, I found it to be meh. Like the songs aren’t anything special and I got bored with this one. I’ll give it 1/10

Standouts:

Palms- I don’t know this was another one that too me just isn’t that special or great. It’s more of the same. It’s boring. And I couldn’t wait for it to end. I’m giving this one 0/10

Standouts:

Horizons/East- the problem with this album is that it drags on for so long. I don’t know it’s just not that great of a record. I’m not a fan of the softness and I found that the choruses/sing-y parts to be annoying. I’m giving this one another 0/10

Standouts:

Well that was a unique deep dive to say the least. Now do I find this band to be an emo band? No I do not I just think they get unfairly placed in that category. That and the tours they get put on.  However, at the end of the day I’m just not a fan and probably won’t be revisiting these albums anytime soon.

Final Grade: D+
