Forgotten Classics: Third Eye Blind

There are certain albums where every most of the songs are considered hits. Now granted they are foreign few between but every once in a while you get that sort of lightning in a bottle and such is the case with today’s Forgotten Classic.  Let’s take a look…….

The Forgotten Classic is “Semi-Charmed Life” from Third Eye Blind off the self titled debut album.  If I can recall correctly, this particular song was one of those guilty pleasures. People would ask me do I listen to more than just death metal or punk and I do remember saying “no that’s all I listened to” but really I’ve always had a soft spot for this song.  It’s just a catchy and fun song, but if you actually read the lyrics, it’s kind of dark. It’s about an addiction to crystal meth, and the transitional period of one’s life. Originally, frontman Stephen Jenkins meant to write this as a response to Lou Reed’s “Walk On The Wild Side” however it was changed due to him seeing friends high on crystal meth at a Primus concert. It was intentionally written to be upbeat and catchy in order to reflect that (as he puts it) “bright, shiny feeling.”  The flipside of writing and composing it as such is that people often mistook it for an upbeat summer jam. All that aside at the end of the day, it is a fun song to listen to, but hopefully after reading this, it’ll give you a better understanding.
