So in continuing with my rewind reviews, I thought I would dive back in to Coheed And Cambria. Since the last time I reviewed them, they’ve released a couple newer albums so let’s take another look…….
The Second Stage Turbine- musically, this one has kind of a sound reminiscent of a band like say Glass Jaw. Singer Claudio Sanchez does have this kind of almost nasally high pitch type of singing but musically this album is really good. Not a bad way to start and I forgot how good this album is. Is it anything mind blowing? No but it’s just a great rock record.
Previous Score: 9/10
New Score: 9/10
Standouts: Junesong Provision, Devil In Jersey City, Delirium Trigger
In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth 3- this one seems to be just a little bit more cohesive even tighter sound wise. I feel like here, they kind of already had a sound in mind but they are taking it to the next level. Again another great album.
Previous Score: 9/10
New Score: 9.5/10
Standouts: A Favor House Atlantic, The Crowing, Cuts Marked In The March Of Men
Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness- there’s just something about this album that I don’t know feels almost epic which is probably the best way I could describe it. It’s easy to see why this is the one (or at least I would assume) that broke them.
Previous Score: 10/10
New Score: 10/10
Standouts: Welcome Home, Mother May I, The Willing Well III: Apollo II: The Telling Truth
No World For Tomorrow- I forgot that Taylor Hawkins (RIP) played drums on this album. If I remember correctly, I didn’t think this one was as good as the last one and yes that is still true to a degree, listening to it again, I forgot that this one is actually better than I remember. It’s a pretty good follow up to the last album and it was nice to give this one another listen.
Previous Score: 8/10
New Score: 9/10
Standouts: Feathers, No World For Tomorrow, Gravemakers & Gunslingers
Year Of The Black Rainbow- I wanted to like this album more because I know it’s supposed to be one of their better albums and while I can see how that would be the case, I found this one to be kinda meh. It has some great moments but as a whole, I couldn’t really get into it. I’d definitely say this one’s good not great
Previous Score: 8/10
New Score: 7/10
Standouts: The Broken, World Of Lines, When Skeletons Live
The Afterman- so in my original review of these guys, I had 2 separate entries however, there is a version where you don’t have to go from one to the other. Now this one I found to be good up to a point. After a few songs, it starts to get really boring and repetitive. I can see what they were trying to do but this one bored me and it got to a point where the songs started to sound the same.
Previous Score (for both): 8/10 and 8/10
New Score: 4/10
Standouts: The Broken!, Key Extraction I: Domino Destitute
The Color Before The Sun- much like the last album, it does have some really good moments and listening to this one again, I didn’t really get into it as much this time around. Like I said some great moments and songs but as a whole, this one again gets kind of boring.
Previous Score: 9/10
New Score: 7/10
Standouts: Island, Atlas, The Audience
The Unheavenly Creatures- I feel like at this point a lot of their stuff is getting formulaic. It seems as if their albums start off great but then get either boring or repetitive and this one is no different. I’m not saying that this one or the last few are bad because they’re not but musically, a lot of the albums tend to drag on.
Previous Score: 7/10
New Score: 6/10
Standouts: The Dark Sentencer, True Ugly, Toys
Vaxis II: A Window Of The Waking Mind- I feel like this one is a slight step up but again, it does get to a point where there are too many songs. Yes I am aware that their albums are all meant to tell a story (see original review) but musically, it starts to get boring. I’ll give this one 7/10
Standouts: Shoulders, Love Murder One, The Liars Club
The Father Of Make Believe- ok so finally, I feel like we are on the right track here. By that I mean this one has elements of their first 3 albums. Yes it does slow things down in parts but overall, I really enjoyed this album. I’ll give this one 9/10
Standouts: Searching For Tomorrow, Meri Of Mercy, Blind Side Sonny
This is a band that definitely tells a story with their albums and most of it is really good. Yes there is a point where their albums do get repetitive and boring but make no mistake, they are all good in their own way and I can see how their fans would like these albums.
