There are bands whose mascot is just as big as they are. Sometimes, certain Iconic Mascots can be the reason why people buy the music. To kick off Iconic Mascots, I can’t think of a better choice than Iron Maiden’s Eddie. Let’s take a look……
Eddie. I mean what can I say that hasn’t been said about him?? I know I’m not the only one who first saw him and thought “that is the coolest thing I’ve seen what band is this?” First known as Ed The Head, Eddie has been on every single Iron Maiden album in some sort of variation. Whether it’s a shirt, hoodie, sticker, you name it, Eddie will be on it. Originally he started out as a papier-mâché mask used on the bands early backdrops. They transferred Eddie from a mask to artist Derek Riggs who then drew him for the bands first album cover. According to bassist Steve Harris, the name originally was The Head but due to their British accents, every time they would say it, it would always come out as “Ead.” And according to guitarist Dave Murray, the name was also inspired by an old joke that went “A wife had a baby, but it was born with only a head and no body. ‘Don’t worry,’ says the doctor. ‘Bring him back in five years time, and we’ll probably have a body for him.’ So five years go by, and there’s Eddie the ‘Ead, as his parents have called him, sitting on the mantelpiece, when in walks his dad. ‘Son,’ he says, ‘today’s a very special day. It’s your fifth birthday, and we’ve got a very special surprise for you.’ ‘Oh no,’ says Eddie. ‘Not another fucking hat!’” What I also think is great is that even for the singles there’s a different variation of Eddie so for those that like to collect things like this, it just makes it that much more fun. Now Iron Maiden have 17 albums and Eddie has appeared on every single one of them and in different variations to match the albums theme. Some variations have included a sphinx, army soldier, a tree monster, and most recently a samurai. Whether you’re a hard-core fan or just a casual listener, one cannot deny the absolute iconic-ness and bad ass-ery that is Eddie!!
