I don’t know for some reason Sweden has the best musicians. Must be something in the water. Anyway, the next band on the chopping block is Ghost. Now this is a band that I did not like at first so we will see if after this I still feel the same way. Let’s take a look……..
Opus Eponymous- to call this record and this band metal would be incorrect. Yes a lot of metal guys like this band and this album. I remember seeing so many shirts for this record being worn. And the artwork is really cool but how is the actual album itself? Well it’s really good. Like I didn’t want to like it but I couldn’t. Yes there are heavy guitars but this is more of a heavy rock record. I would actually say that this is more of a Blue Oyster Cult sounding record. Definitely check this one out. I give this 10/10
Standouts: Con Clavi Con Dio, Satan Prayer, Prime Mover
Infestissumam- so yes this is a great follow up but the problem I have with this is that there are some really great songs and some that are just ok. As I said before, these guys definitely have that Blue Oyster Cult thing going for them but as a whole, this one is not as good as the first. I give it 8/10
Standouts- Ghuleh / Zombie Queen, Depth Of Satan’s Eyes, Jigolo Har Megiddo
If You Have Ghost- this a 5 song EP and it’s got some stuff from Infestissumam on it and it also has a cover of I’m A Marionette by ABBA which is actually a pretty good cover. This EP was also produced by Dave Grohl. A pretty good companion to Infestissumam. I give it 9/10
Standouts: I’m A Marionette, Waiting For The Night
Meliora- I do remember seeing the video for the song Square Hammer on I want to say VH1 or Fuse. It’s a cool video. I also remember when the song Cirice was played on Jonesey’s Jukebox on KLOS. That was the first time I really heard any Ghost songs and I just couldn’t get into them. Listening now, I actually think they are really good songs. The rest of the album is also really good. The songs have a little more of an up tempo to them and the album as a whole feels more I guess grounded or cohesive. I give this album 9.5/10
Standouts: From The Pinnacle To The Pit, Mummy Dust, Devil Church
Prequelle- so with this one, the first couple songs start off kind of heavy then they kind of mellow out. Still though this is a great rock record. I had read some reviews that this one was poppy and too soft but it really isn’t. If you listen to their previous records, you’ll see that they haven’t really changed their sound. Yes it’s a softer record but that’s what this band is known for. Again this is not a heavy metal band. Do not skip this one it’s just as good as the other records. I give this 8/10
Standouts: Rats, Dance Macabre, Faith
If you are looking for a modern day Blue Oyster Cult or King’s X then definitely check these guys out. If you are looking for a smooth voice singing about satanic things then check these guys out. If you are looking for something new and different then check these guys out. I wish I had gotten into these guys earlier because this is a really good band with awesome records and I would think their live shows are an experience.
