There really was something fun and magical about the early 2000’s. It’s almost as if VH1 and MTV were trying to bring hard rock and metal into the mainstream. A great example of this is when VH1 had an award show called VH1 Rock Honors which was an annual award ceremony paying homage to influential rock bands. Let’s take a look…..
According to the presenter Jamie Kennedy, this group formed about an hour prior to their performance and was dubbed The One Time Only Supergroup. Consisting of Rob Zombie on vocals, Slash (Guns N Roses, Velvet Revolver), Ace Frehley (ex-KISS), and Gilby Clarke (ex-Guns N Roses) on guitar, Scott Ian (Anthrax) on bass, and Tommy Lee (Motley Crue) on drums, they performed the KISS song “God Of Thunder.” I can only imagine what it would’ve been like to be in that audience and watch this all unfold live. You can absolutely tell that everybody on that stage is just having the time of their life especially Scott Ian. Of course Scott is always fun to watch on stage as he’s very energetic no matter who he’s playing with. Rob Zombie sounds great and the three guitar players all sound amazing, and this has got to be one of the best performances of “God Of Thunder.” This particular song also kind of reminds you how heavy KISS could actually be and while it’s not the heaviest song in the world, you can definitely hear how it influenced a lot of other bands. This is just a really fun performance and it did come out at a time when reality TV was kind of at its peak. I do remember this aired not too long after the reality TV show Supergroup ended. Re-watching this video on YouTube definitely took me back a little bit, but I’ll still go and watch this every now and then.
