I’ve decided to do another mixed bag review. Now normally I like to wait after a few other discographies but I’ve actually been wanting to do this one for awhile and now the time feels right. This is a mixed bag review but instead of random albums from bands I decided to do one of movie soundtracks. Soundtracks are awesome because we usually get songs not released on albums. And like with the other mixed reviews, there will be no rankings. So here we go…..
Detroit Rock City- ok so if you haven’t seen this movie you definitely need to get on that. It’s basically about 4 losers who want to go see KISS but their tickets get burned by one of the kids super religious moms so they have to figure out a way to get into the show. It’s a funny movie and there are some awesome songs on this soundtrack. It’s got a lot of classic rock bands such as Black Sabbath, Cheap Trick, and evening David Bowie. What also makes this one a great soundtrack is that we also get some great cover songs. Some are Ted Nugent’s Cat Scratch Fever done by Pantera, KISS’s Strutter by The Donnas, and Thin Lizzy’s The Boys Are Back in Town by Everclear. The only song that I would say that should’ve been left off was Marilyn Manson’s cover of Highway To Hell. It’s a terrible cover and is just such a weird choice. Other than that, check this one out. I give it 9/10
Standouts:
- Strutter by The Donnas
- Cat Scratch Fever by Pantera
- School Days by The Runaways
- Shout it Outloud by KISS
The Crow- ok seriously if you’ve never seen this movie before, seriously stop reading right now and go watch it. It’s one of the greatest movies ever made and this soundtrack is one of the best soundtracks too. Like the movie, the soundtrack is also really dark but the songs on it are badass. I mean you have bands like Helmet, Stone Temple Pilots, Rage Against The Machine, and so much more. I think I actually listened to the soundtrack from the second Crow movie (which is a great one too) before this one and this one is so much better. I mean what can I say? It’s dark, diverse, and badass. I give this one 9.5/10
Standouts:
- Darkness by Rage Against The Machine
- Milktoast by Helmet
- Dead Souls by Nine Inch Nails
- The Badge by Pantera
Last Action Hero- this is one of those 90’s Arnold Schwarzenegger films that is a spoof of all those action films from the 80’s and 90’s. I know that it didn’t do too well in theaters but I love this movie and the soundtrack is another great one too. Here we have more rock bands that were big at the time. We have songs on here from Anthrax, Megadeth, Alice In Chains, Tesla, and more. The cool thing about this one is that most of the songs are actually in the movie. Like the movie, the soundtrack is just so much fun to listen to. I give it 9/10
Standouts:
- Angry Again by Megadeth
- Poison My Eyes by Anthrax
- What the Hell Have I by Alice In Chains
- Last Action Hero by Tesla
Private Parts- so again this is one of those movies where probably not too many younger people probably won’t know about. The simple premise, it’s a biopic about Howard Stern. I honestly haven’t seen this one in such a long time but I remember liking the movie. Anyway, the soundtrack is pretty diverse and like other soundtracks, it has lines from the movie scattered throughout. It’s got songs from Ozzy Osbourne with Type O Negative, The Ramones, Van Halen, and Marilyn Manson. Personally, I think there should be more songs and less movie dialogue but overall, a decent soundtrack. I give it 8/10
Standouts:
- Pinhead by The Ramones
- I Make My Own Rules by Dave Navarro, Flea, and Chad Smith
- Pictures of Matchstick Men by Ozzy Osbourne and Type O Negative
The Faculty- so this movie is about a group of high school teenagers who discover that their teachers are actually aliens. The teens decide to band together and try to stop them and save their town from the alien invasion. This is another movie from the 90’s and definitely should be checked out. It stars Elijah Wood, Josh Hartnett, Famke Janssen, Robert Patrick, and others in this awesome and badass movie. Seriously check this one out if you haven’t because it’s a lot of fun. Now onto the soundtrack. Well it’s definitely a 90’s one that’s for sure but the one really cool thing about it is that the opening song is by Class of 99 which is a group composed of Layne Staley, Tom Morello, Stephen Perkins, Martyn LeNoble, and Matt Serletic for a cover of Pink Floyd’s Another Brick in The Wall. Aside from that, we have The Offspring, Garbage, Creed covering Alice Cooper’s I’m 18, and others. I give it 7/10
Standouts:
- Another Brick in The Wall by Class of 99
- The Kids Aren’t Alright by The Offspring
- Haunting Me by Stabbing Westward
- Stay Young by Oasis
Judgement Night- the movie is about four guys coming home from a boxing match where they make a wrong turn and end up in a cat and mouse game with a ruthless drug lord. This is another one that I haven’t seen in years but I remember liking it. What makes this soundtrack different from other ones is that it has rock and heavy metal bands who have collaborated with hip hop artists. Here we have collaborations with bands like Helmet and House Of Pain, Slayer and Ice-T, Biohazard and Onyx, Pearl Jam and Cypress Hill, and Mudhoney and Sir Mix A lot. Again this is a really neat soundtrack and I definitely think one should check it out especially if you like rock and rap. I give it 8.5/10
Standouts:
- Just Another Victim by Helmet and House of Pain
- Disorder by Slayer and Ice-T
- Me Myself and My Microphone by Living Colour and Run D.M.C.
- Another Body Murdered by Faith No More and Boo-Ya T.R.I.B.E.
Freddy vs. Jason- I really shouldn’t have to give a long synopsis of this movie. It’s basically Freddy Krueger vs. Jason Voorhees and it’s absolutely badass. I really like this movie and really hoping they make another one. Anyway, the soundtrack itself is also really badass. We have songs from Slipknot, Chimaira, Hatebreed, Mushroomhead, In Flames, and others. What’s notable about this album is that at the time of its release, 14 of the 23 bands had unreleased songs that appeared on this for the first time. I mean for the most part, all the songs are great with maybe one or two that can be skipped. I give this 9.5/10
Standouts:
- Army of Me by Chimaira
- Sun Doesn’t Rise by Mushroomhead
- When Darkness Falls by Killswitch Engage
- Condemned Until Rebirth by Hatebreed
This one was a lot of fun to do. All of these movies are definitely ones that I would highly recommend and definitely listen to the soundtracks that accompany them. And yes I plan on doing another soundtrack edition of the mixed bag reviews.
