Up next is a band that I’ve sort of been toying with as to whether or not I should put them on the chopping block. But given that they just put out a new EP this year and I was lucky enough to see them at Aftershock 2025, the time seems right. So the band on the chopping block is Kittie and they’re one of those bands that I’ve only listened to maybe one or two songs (if that). So with that, let’s take a look……
Spit- OK so this is the album that gave us the song Brackish and it’s a good song and aside from that one the rest of the album is angry and you can tell that these ladies definitely have that kind of angst. I feel like this album came out at sort of a weird time kind of in between when Nü-Metal was sort of going out of style and sort of win metal had this kinda weird period in the early 2000s. It’s a great debut album and the biggest nitpick I can say about it is that it does sound kind of dated. I’m gonna go ahead and give this album 9/10.
Standouts: Do You Think I’m A Whore?, Raven, Get Off
Oracle- whereas the last album was a Nü-Metal album, this one loses that sound and goes for more of a death metal sound. It’s not traditional metal, but it’s certainly a bit more extreme than Spit was. It certainly sounds more mature than the first album and I actually think it’s a really good follow up. Overall not bad and I’m gonna go ahead and give this 9/10
Standouts: Mouthful Of Poison, Severed, No Name
Until The End- this one is sort of a continuation from Oracle but I would say it’s a more melodic version of that album. One thing I did really enjoy with this album was that the guitar riffs are just really crushing and big. I am a big fan of those kinds of riffs and this album definitely has loads of them. I would say overall it’s a good album I’m definitely worth a listen so I’m gonna go ahead and give this album 8/10
Standouts: Look So Pretty, Burning Bridges, Daughters Down
Funeral For Yesterday- OK so the biggest and most obvious difference between this album and the previous album is the clean singing. No you don’t see too many bands of this type of music go from harsh to clean vocals and if they do, it can be hit or miss. Well unexpected. I would say that it’s definitely more of a hit and I do like the fact that they decided to go a somewhat different route. Aside from the clean vocals this album is also a lot more melodic. Again, this isn’t really a band that comes to mine when you think of cool guitar riffs but like the other album is the roofing on here is bad ass. I also do respect the fact that Morgan decided to do this entire album with mostly clean vocals. I’m gonna go ahead and give this one 8/10.
Standouts: Funeral For Yesterday, Slow Motion, Witch Hunt
In The Black- what I like about this album is not only does it incorporate elements of groove metal and thrash metal, but like with older releases, it incorporates a good amount of death, metal and even just a slight touch of black metal. There’s the usual moments of clean vocals and I actually found myself enjoying this one quite a bit. Overall, this is just a really fun record so I’m gonna go ahead and give this one 9.5/10.
Standouts: Cut Throat, My Plague, Now Or Never
I’ve Failed You- well this album doesn’t really present anything new or whatever it does build off of the previous album. Like this is one of those instances where you can listen to both albums back to back and it would just be like listening to one long album. It’s good but again it’s kind of more of the same I’m gonna go ahead and give this one 8/10
Standouts: I’ve Failed You, Come Undone, Ugly
Fire- one thing to note is that this is their first album in 13 years. I know they went on sort of a hiatus in between the album and the last one. I’m sure it has something to do with the cost of going out on tour. I know one of their members passed away, so it’s a lot to happen for a band. Now, sometimes when a band comes back after a hiatus, they’re following album kind of picks up where the last one left off. That’s not really the case here with this album. You can tell that they’re refreshed and ready to go. It’s almost as if it’s a new band but not at the same time. I don’t know. I can’t really explain it. All I know is that this album is pretty damn good and I’m glad to see that they’re back putting out new music. I’m gonna give this album 9.5/10.
Standouts: Fire, Wound, Grime
Spit XXV- so I guess in celebration of the 25th anniversary of their debut album. They decided to put out a re-recording of some of their popular songs off of the first album. Like with most bands, who decide to do things like this it usually ends with great results and that is definitely the case here. Like the last album they just sound more mature and heavier. I really like the direction that they’re going in and I almost wish they would’ve just re-recorded the whole album. But either way, I’m glad they re-recorded the songs that they did because these songs are absolutely crushing. I’m gonna go ahead and give this EP 9.5/10.
Standouts: Spit, Brackish XXV
As I said in this review, sometimes bands need to take a break for a little bit and then come back. This is definitely one of those bands that is making a comeback and I’m really happy to see that they’re making a resurgence. When I saw them at Aftershock, it was pretty crowded at the stage that they were playing. My hope is that we can get a full tour or at least have them be a support to another band that’s on tour because they’re definitely one of those bands that I’d like to see play a longer set. I remember they came on my radar after coming across live clips on YouTube and I remember thinking that there live performances were pretty damn heavy. Definitely a fun band with some great albums and I definitely enjoyed this one a lot more than I would’ve thought. Again hopefully we get a tour sooner rather than later especially an LA stop!!
