On this day, August 28, 2026, we have a brand new album from Mastodon!! This one is definitely special but I don’t want to get to into it so with that let’s take a look…..
At this point, I am thoroughly convinced that Mastodon is one of those bands that can do no wrong musically. Every single one of their albums are great even the ones that are considered not as popular are still pretty damn great!! This new album Marrow Deep it’s another perfect example of a great album. Mastodon have never really been one of those bands to write the fastest songs and there are a lot more mid-tempo songs but they’re really really good. One thing that definitely stands out is that there is a jazziness to this album which (if you listen with headphones) makes for a really fun and unique listening experience. But aside from that, the rest of the album has elements of psychedelic, prog, sludge, stoner, and even some punk. All of this while going for a more raw even primitive sound. However, since the band now has a keyboard player, so there are also more keyboard parts.
Now, of course, let’s address what I would say is the elephant in the room here. This is THE first record WITHOUT founding member Brent Hinds who tragically passed away in August 2025. According to drummer Brann Dailor, Brent didn’t even record any material for this album which is really a shame because it would’ve been nice to have one final recording or any ounce of material from him. However, there are two new members in this band who did contribute to the writing process those being new guitar player Nick Johnston and keyboardist João Nogueira. Both have been serving as touring members, but now are official full-time members.
Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the amount of great guest musicians. We have Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath), Randy Blythe (Lamb Of God), Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age), Neil Fallon (Clutch), Joe Duplantier (Gojira), Ben Koller and Nate Newton (both from Converge). It’s honestly hard to pick which of the songs that these guys were on as my favorite. They’re all great songs and it just makes this album that much better!! This is definitely one of my favorite albums so far in 2026 and I cannot wait to see them play songs off this record live!! I’ll give this album 9/10.
