WTF Is This?? Six Feet Under’s Graveyard Classics

Cover songs……love them or hate them, they are a thing and depending on how well they’re done, they can absolutely be amazing or absolutely atrocious!!  In fact, they can be so bad they make you go WTF Is This?  Such is the case with Six Feet Under’s Graveyard Classics albums.  But the real question is are they really that bad? Let’s take a look…..

When anybody does a cover song, it’s sort of begs the question why would you spend time money and effort into recording somebody else’s material?  I mean, if you’re gonna do all that you may as well write your own stuff.  Now it’s not out of the ordinary for some bands to include a cover song on an album of new material.  But when a band makes several covers albums, you have to stop and ask why are you doing this?  When it comes to the Graveyard Classics, there are four of these things, and I can only assume that they were done as either something fun or to pay tribute to bands that Six Feet Under were inspired by.

If I’m being completely honest, there are actually some pretty decent covers on these albums. Some cover make sense like Slayer, Exodus, Venom, and Accept but  it’s when you get to the AC/DC and Thin Lizzy covers that it starts to WTF were they thinking?  The first Graveyard Classics I kind of get.  You want to cover the songs that made you want to play music and this is the best way to do so, I get it.  But seriously I genuinely want to know whose idea it was to have an entire cover of AC/DC’s Back In Black album?? It’s not good and what makes it even worse is that they play those songs live.  Then of course you have covers of “Purple Haze,” “Starbreaker” by Judas Priest, “Stepping Stone” by The Monkees, and other various artists and they’re all just awful.

At the end of the day, Six Feet Under’s Graveyard Classics are a perfect example of just because you can doesn’t mean you should. And I’m all for paying respect or tribute to your favorite bands but 90% of these songs are garbage.  I said what I said.  And what’s worse is that you have people that will defend this by saying that these cover albums are amazing or that they’re badass which is simply not the case. All of these cover albums come off as cheesy and cringey.  They’re so bad that you can’t help but laugh. Now this idea for this article was inspired by a death metal page on Instagram.  The video was them playing “T.N.T.” live at a festival and it said something like how great it was and how it transcended genres. And for a brief 2 seconds it was great but then Chris Barnes starts singing and it all becomes cheesy.  To make it worse, the comment section was pretty much saying how badass it was. Stuff like this is what makes non death metal fans laugh at this type of music. I’m honestly not sure what’s worse, the fact that they made four albums or that you have fans that will defend this crap??  I honestly can’t emphasize how cheesy and crappy these albums are and if you want a good laugh, then give the Graveyard Classics albums a spin. If you really want a laugh, give the second one a spin.
