When it comes to an artist like Billy Idol, one cannot deny the impact that he has had especially in the 80s. I’m in to be honest here. He is absolutely one of those artists with a lot of greatest hits. One of those is “Dancing With Myself” which is a fun song however, fast forward to 2004 and The Donnas released their version of the same song. So the question is, which version do you prefer/listen to more?? Let’s take a look….
OK, so up first is the original and I must say it is one of those songs that captures the 80s sound almost perfectly. Originally the song was released by Billy Idol’s original band Gen X. However, the version that most are familiar with is the one that was remixed and re-released once Billy went solo. Both versions have a good mixture of post-punk, new wave, glam rock, and pop-punk. Of course back then as it is with every hit song, there was a music video to accompany it and this one was actually directed by Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist director Tobe Hooper.
Now we get to The Donnas version and like the original, it’s just a lot of fun. Their version however, has more of a pop punk/punk flavor. This is the kind of cover that pays respect to the original while simultaneously putting a new spin on it. This version was also made for the soundtrack Mean Girls and while there is no music video, there definitely should have been.
As I previously stated both songs are just so much fun to listen to however for me personally I find myself listening to The Donnas version a lot more. so the question remains……which version do you prefer?? Do you prefer the original “dancier” version or the pop-punk version??? Or do you like both equally???
Winner: The Donnas
