Over these last couple of years, I’ve really come to appreciate Down a lot more. They are the perfect blend of stoner rock and metal and their album Down III: Over The Under has really grown on me. In 2026 (and at the time of writing this), they are currently on tour with Helmet and I’m starting to see that one Glaring Omission is the lack of songs from their third album. Let’s take a look……
When it comes to Down, the albums that get brought up are usually the first two which is really too bad because Over The Under really has some great songs on it. I mean the album opens with “Three Suns And One Star” which is right up there with “Temptations Wings” from NOLA. After going back and listening to this album from start to finish, I forgot how blues-y this is. I also forgot that this album has some pretty big, epic guitar riffs, and if anyone knows me knows that I enjoy those kind of riffs. Another reason why I have a greater appreciation for this album is because it’s a very Sabbath sounding record. Just listen to the song “I Scream” or even “N.O.D.” and you’ll hear what I’m talking about. With with a new album on the way, hopefully they can start to add songs off this album into the live set. I mean seriously, what they’re gonna play songs off the first two albums and then the new one?? That seems kind of silly but it would be a shame if they did. Now I know that most of these songs have to do with some heavy subject matter including Hurricane Katrina, the murder of Dime, and the bad blood between Phil Anselmo and the Abbott brothers. However, there really are some great and songs that absolutely need to be played live!! The last time anything was played from this album was back in 2021!!
