Up next is a band that actually flew under the radar for me. Like they are one of those bands that when you listen to their stuff you’ll be like “oh yeah that’s where this band got this from.” The band on the chopping block is The Stooges and I know it’s kind of a curveball but I should’ve done them a while ago. Anyway, let’s take a look……….
The Stooges- some might say that this is a punk record but really it would be more accurate to say that this is a precursor to punk (at least American punk). It definitely has that late 60’s/early 70’s sound but doesn’t sound dated. Either way this is one of those classic albums and I’ll give it a 9.5/10
Standouts: Not Right, 1969, No Fun
Funhouse- I’d say that this one is less punk and more hard rock. It almost has kind of a jazzy and psychedelic feel to it. Its also kinda slowed down compared to the last album and I’m pretty sure it might hit differently if you were in something. I also didn’t realize that they wrote the song Down On The Street which is on Rage Against The Machine’s covers album Renegades. Absolutely a great follow up and I have to give it 10/10
Standouts: L.A. Blues, Dirt, 1970
Raw Power- this one is the most punk sounding album so far but again it’s got a little bit of that psychedelic tinge to it. It’s a little weird but in a good kind of way and kind of seems like they were influenced by David Bowie a little bit. Anyway, I’ll give this one a 10/10
Standouts: Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell, Shake Appeal, Death Trip
The Weirdness- I do know that this is their first album since 1973 and while that is a long time, this is actually a pretty good album. You can tell that they did this one for fun and that’s just what this album is. I’ll give it 9.5/10
Standouts: Trollin’, ATM, She Took My Money
Ready To Die- to me, Iggy Pop’s vocals sound a bit like Lou Reed which actually fits. This one has saxophones again just like on Funhouse and overall, this is another fun record. It’s cool because you take a legacy band like these guys and they made their 70’s albums, came back and this is how they would sound today. It’s a neat record and I’m actually giving it a 10/10
Standouts: Sex And Money, Dirty Deal, Job
There’s a certain type of fun listening to these albums especially the later half of their catalog. It’s kind of too bad there’s only 5 albums but I guess that’s what makes them special. I do wish I could’ve seen them when they reunited because I’ll bet their shows were pretty damn good. Also can someone buy Iggy Pop a shirt?
