So after listening to music that was either rock or pop rock, I decided to do a band that was heavier and had some aggression to it. So in keeping with bands of the 90’s, I decided it’s time to do the band Korn. This is one I’ve been wanting to do for some time now because I stopped after their See You On The Other Side album. I remember when these guys first came out that if you listened to them in school, you were labeled as a trouble maker. So let’s check it out……
Korn- talk about a great debut album. This album is one of those albums that starts off strong and stays that way through out. It’s dark and I mean the meanings are just so in your face. It deals with being bullied, drug abuse, or nursery rhymes. I think they played this album in it’s entirety a few years ago too. Anyway this is a classic and I give it 10/10
Standouts- Clown, Divine, Ball Tongue
Life is Peachy- this one picks up,where the last record left off. It’s a great follow up from the self titled. What made these guys so good was that what they were doing was fresh and new. This album continues that trend however it’s not as strong as their self titled album but it’s still a good album regardless. I give this 8/10
Standouts: Swallow, A.D.I.D.A.S., Twist/Chi
Follow the Leader- this is when they really started to get popular. It’s got their most popular songs on it and there seems to be a hip hop element on this one as well. We also get some guest vocalists on here with Ice Cube on the song Children of the Korn, Fred Durst on the song All in the Family, and some hip hop guy named Tre Hardson on the song Cameltosis. A great album and I give it 9.5/10
Standouts: Justin, Children of the Korn, Reclaim My Place
Issues- this one is another great album however, for some reason listening to it now, the songs don’t resonate with me like they used to. I don’t know for some reason, the last album just seems like a better album. That’s not to say that this isn’t a great record but I feel that it doesn’t flow as well as Follow. One thing I’ll say is that there is a pretty good use of bagpipes in the beginning which is badass. I give it 8/10
Standouts: Dead/Falling Away From Me, Trash, Beg For Me
Untouchables- so I guess a lot of work went into the making of this record as well as there being tensions amongst the band. It really shows that hard work pays off because this is a great record. Musically, the riffs are great as are the bass and drums. Vocally, I think Jonathan Davis is at his best here. I give it 9.5/10
Standouts: Embrace, Here to Stay, Bottled Up Inside
Take a Look In The Mirror- this record goes back to their aggressiveness that was present on the first couple of albums. This would also be the last record to feature Brian Head Welch on guitar until 2013. To me this record seems a little rushed but it’s actually not bad for an album that came out the following year from the previous album. As much as the band themselves don’t like this one I don’t think it’s that bad. I give it 8/10
Standouts: Break Some Off, Deep Inside, Did My Time
See You On The Other Side- this is the first album without founding guitarist Head and this would also be the last album with drummer David Silveria. I remember seeing these guys at the KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas and I think they got Rob Patterson from Otep to play second guitar but he was behind the stage playing which I thought was weird. How’s the album? I personally don’t think it’s very good. You can definitely tell there’s something missing. I give props to them for branching out and trying something different but the end result doesn’t work and this is when I stopped listening to Korn. I give it 0/10
Standouts: None this album isn’t very good
Untitled- if Korn was going to go industrial then this is the album to do so. I mean it sounds very much like a Korn album but with an industrial and experimental flavor to it. Overall, it’s not that great and nothing really grabs me or stands out. I give it 0/10
Standouts: nothing really
Korn III: Remember Who You Are- so I guess they wanted to go back to their roots for this one. I wouldn’t say it’s a complete throwback album but it does have that funky bass sound that was present of previous albums. It’s not an aggressive record like the first one or some others. This would be the first record with new drummer Ray Luzier. Overall, this record is just ok. I give it 3/10
Standouts: Pop a Pill
The Path Of Totality- well if you ever wanted to hear what club Korn sounded like then look no further. This album sounds like music you’d hear in a club but with Jonathan Davis singing vocals. There are a bunch of people who I have never heard of so I’m not going to bother naming them. If you want to listen to it then go for it but I don’t recommend this album. Props for trying something different but I don’t like it. It’s everything I don’t like so I will give this -0/10
Standouts: nothing at all
The Paradigm Shift- this would be the first album with Brian Head Welch back on guitar and I must say that it’s so much better than the last album. It sees them going back to their Untouchables kind of sound as well as elements from albums like Follow and Issues. Overall, a decent album worth listening to. I give it 7/10
Standouts: Paranoid and Aroused, Love & Meth, Tell Me What You Want
The Serenity of Suffering- the second album with Head back on definitely feels more like their earlier stuff. Head also has more writing credits on this album and it definitely shows. The songs on here are heavier and I personally think that this is more of a comeback album than the last one. Corey Taylor even guest vocals on the song A Different World. There are some kind of meh moments but overall a pretty good record. I give it 8/10
Standouts: Rotting in Vain, Die Yet Another Night, Insane
The Nothing- well for me personally this was the first album that I had listened to since See You On The Other Side and I’m glad I did because this is a great album. It’s their best since Follow and I think that this is the ultimate comeback album. Some will say that they haven’t put anything good out since Untouchables to which I say have you heard this album? This is their best album in years and I definitely give it 10/10.
Standouts: The Darkness is Revealing, The Ringmaster, You’ll Never Find Me
Well I can honestly say that this is a band where all the albums sound different. While they don’t have the best discography, there are some albums that are classics and are really good. I am glad that the new album is so good because hopefully we see a trend of good things to come in future albums. If you haven’t listened to them in awhile I would definitely give the new album a listen because it’s their best album in years.
