Cream

So the band before the last review I decided to take a look at was the band Cream (which by the way is a dumb name). I don’t know a whole lot about this band except that Eric Clapton was in it. So here we go…….

Fresh Cream- let’s see what can be said about the overall feel of this album? Well it’s a very “jammy” sound and it’s also a relaxed sounding record and at the same time it rocks. Like this is the kind of record I’d put on to relax or even listen to in the background while doing other things. I think when I first heard songs off this record, I was in some record store in LA and remember asking the guy there who this band was and he said “you don’t know? That’s the band Cream.”  Anyway, I think old of record stores with snobby employees when I hear this record. I give it 9/10

Standouts: Four Until Late, N.S.U., I Feel Free

Disraeli Gears- so if the last album was more of a jam session type sound, then this one is more of a psychedelic rock sound which is not surprising seeing as how that was the thing back in the 60’s. This record however manages to combine the feel of the first record and adds a blues to it.  If you are looking for a really blues driven record that has psychedelic mixed in, then this one definitely fits the bill. I give this one 7/10

Standouts: Sunshine of Your Love, Lawdy Mama, Strange Brew

Wheels of Fire- so here we have a straight rock record. I feel like this one shows more of how great of a guitar god Eric Clapton really is here. I mean the guitars on here are really good and stand out. Of all the albums so far, this one feels like it’s a straightforward rock album. I give it 8/10

Standouts: Born Under a Bad Sign, White Room, Those Were The Days

Goodbye- ok so when bands like KISS and Black Sabbath announce they are saying goodbye, they still continue to tour and make albums. This would not be the case with Cream. This album is less of an album and more of an EP because there are three songs that are new material and three songs that are live. The new material is actually pretty good and it’s kind of impressive that a band who is calling it quits is able to put out good material. It’s not really psychedelic or a regular rock record but it’s kind of almost like a mixture of the two. I really like these songs and kind of wished they did more afterwards but I guess as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. I give this one 8.5/10

Standouts: Badge, Doing That Scrapyard Thing, What a Bringdown

Overall, this band went away way too early and unfortunately we will never be able to see them again what with the death of drummer Ginger Baker and bassist Jack Bruce. And it’s really too bad because I’ve wondered what they would sound like or if more people would know about them. I suppose somewhere down the line, there could have been another reunion but we will have to just be happy with the four albums they gave us.

Final Grade: A+
