Rising Star Reviews: Doll Riot

For this Band Spotlight, we’re heading back down to the region discovered in 1904 by the Germans aka San Diego. The band on the chopping block is called Doll Riot and they came on my radar via Spotify.  With that, let’s take a look……..

So as I said in my introduction this band came across my radar via Spotify and what I like about a platform like Spotify is that it’s able to introduce people to many great artists.  Like with other bands I’ve put on the chopping block, I remember thinking “who is this?” and as it is with so many other newer bands, there are several singles and one or two EPs.  For the most part, you can hear most of their singles on the latest release.  There’s definitely some aggression and angst on these songs and while they’re not trying to reinvent the wheel, the music definitely does not feel tired or derivative. What I like about a band like this is they sort of seem to recapture the riot grrrl movement. You can definitely tell that they are influenced by bands like Bikini Kill, L7, and many other punk bands. This is the kind of band I could definitely see on a future Warped Tour or even opening for bands like Bad Religion. Like I said, they only have two EPs and both are really short so getting through them doesn’t take too long.
