Suicidal Tendencies

So in keeping with more thrash metal I thought I’d slightly change it up by reviewing a crossover thrash metal band. The band up on the chopping block is Suicidal Tendencies. I remember seeing them at Sounds Of The Underground in 2007 and enjoying them so let’s take a look……..

Suicidal Tendencies- ah yes the album that is credited as helping create crossover thrash and gave us the song Institutionalized. The rest of the album is a lot of fun and if you are a fan of hardcore punk then definitely listen to this album. Not much more to say about this classic so I’ll give this one 10/10

Standouts: I Shot The Devil, Fascist Pig, Subliminal

Join The Army- this one has a little bit more thrashiness to it unlike the last album which was more punk. Mike Muir’s vocals at times sound similar to Lemmy. This is another great album and a great follow up record. I’ll give this one another 10/10

Standouts: Join The Army, The Prisoner, Human Guinea Pig

How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can’t Even Smile Today- so here there is hardly any punk sound on here and it’s definitely a thrash record. I actually really enjoyed this record a lot more than I thought. And even though the punk sound is pretty much gone, this was another fun record. This is another 10/10

Standouts: Trip At The Brain, Surf And Slam, Hearing Voices

Controlled By Hatred/Feel Like Shit…..Deja Vú- this one is basically 2 EPs put together and is a bunch of re-recorded songs as well as cover songs from Mike Muir’s other band No Mercy. It’s just ok and nothing really special but check it out if you really want to. I’ll give it 8/10

Standouts: Waking The Dead, It’s Not Easy, Master Of No Mercy

Lights…..Camera…..Revolution- again this is now a thrash record and less of a crossover thrash record. This one also has some elements of funk and that’s probably because this is the first record with Robert Trujillo. It’s definitely a little different and unique but in a good way. I’ll give this 9/10

Standouts: Alone, Send Me Your Money, Lovely

The Art Of Rebellion- I think it’s safe to say that this one is their experimental album. It’s softer than their other records and maybe they were trying to fit in with the whole grunge thing that was going on at the time. I will give them props for trying something new but I didn’t really enjoy this one as much. I found it to be kind of boring. I’ll give this one 5/10

Standouts: Can’t Stop, Monopoly On Sorrow, I’ll Hate You Better

Still Cyco After All These Years- this is another album of re-recorded songs and they are songs from the first two albums and Lights Camera album.  The songs sound good but that’s pretty much all I have to say about this one. I’ll give it 7/10

Standouts: Possessed, War Inside My Head, I Want More

Suicidal For Life- I did read that this one wasn’t as well received as their other records but I liked this one. It kinda goes back to the hardcore sound a little bit. I do know that this one was made right before they went a temporary hiatus/break up but this album is pretty good. I’ll give it 8/10

Standouts: No Bullshit, Fucked Up Just Right, Don’t Give A Fuck

Freedumb- ok so it was about 5 or so years since the last record and this is how you make a comeback record. This one has a little bit of everything on it. I really liked this record and a lot of the songs I could see being in those skateboarding videos. Anyway give this one a listen. I’ll give this one 10/10

Standouts: Freedumb, Naked, Cyco Vision

Free Your Soul….And Save My Mind- I think the word I’d use to describe this one would be average. It’s just ok.  Like I liked the album but it’s one I feel like I wouldn’t revisit anytime soon. I’ll give this one 6/10

Standouts: Self Destruct, Start Your Brain, Children Of The Bored

No Mercy Fool!/The Suicidal Family- again with the re-recorded albums? Aside from the two new songs on here this album is just whatever. Anyway, listen to it for the new songs but other than that, I say skip this one. I’ll give it 6/10

Standouts: No Mercy Fool, Something Inside Me

13- definitely a step up from the last couple records. I feel like this one they try to go back to their roots a little bit here while keeping with their modern sound.  Is it anything new and exciting? No not really if you’re a fan of this band though, I think you’ll enjoy this one.  I’ll give it 8/10

Standouts: God Only Knows…Who I Am, Living The Fight, Smash It

World Gone Mad- so this is the first album to have Dave Lombardo on drums and the new bass player Ra Diaz is also a welcome addition. Now I thought I read somewhere that this might’ve been their last record but clearly this isn’t. This is definitely what you’d expect from this band. Nothing new but just straight up thrash metal with a little bit of funk elements and rock elements. I’ll give this 8/10

Standouts: World Gone Mad, The New Degeneration, Damage Control

Still Cyco Punk After All These Years- this one does in fact have punk back in the sound as well as the thrash stuff. It does seem to go back to having that punk sound so I guess you could say these guys have come full circle. Overall it’s a decent listen. I’ll give it 8/10

Standouts: F.U.B.A.R., Nothin’ To Lose, All I Ever Get

If you are into punk you’ll like these guys.  If you like thrash metal you’ll like these guys. I think it’s safe to say that they appeal to more than metal guys. I do remember when I saw them they had a huge audience and they brought a lot of energy to their show. Even though they have a lot of albums, they are not all the same.
