The Closer: Whitechapel- Possibilities Of An Impossible Existence

Deathcore is one of those metal sub-genres that really only has a handful of great bands. One of the bands to do it best is Whitechapel. Of all those bands, they were the ones that branched out and tried different things and they actually did it quite well. For this Closer, we’re taking a look at the song “Possibilities Of An Impossible Existence” off the 2012 self titled album.  Let’s take a look…….

One of the things that makes this songs great is the slow, crushing, riffs.  I’m a big fan of those kinds of guitar riffs and while this may be one of their slower songs, it’s definitely one of my favorites. In an interview, vocalist Phil Bozeman said that the song is about the struggles with his stepfather who entered his life after the death of his father.  It would also be days before he and his sisters would see their mother and stepfather, and his stepfather didn’t seem to care about any of them. Of course, like any great song there usually is a music video to accompany it and this is one of my favorite music videos. The music video is filmed in black and white and takes place at the Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival (I really miss those). No I’m not sure if this was done on purpose but the video reminds me a lot of those old Pantera home videos. This is also the perfect closer because it brings back the pianos and string melodies that is on the album’s opening track thus creating a full circle moment as well as tying the whole album together.
