Danzig

Awhile ago I reviewed The Misfits so it would make sense to review Danzig and that’s who is up on the chopping block. Now I have really only heard one of his songs that being Mother so let’s take a look……….

Danzig- ok so if you are going into this one thinking that it’s going to be an extension of The Misfits then you would be wrong. This is more bluesy and more of a hard rock sound and I actually really like this record. Aside from the song Mother the rest of the album is quite good so with that I’ll give this one 10/10.

Standouts: Not Of This World, Am I Demon, Evil Thing

Danzig II: Lucifuge- so this one continues with more of the hard rock sound and I think by now it’s pretty clear that he was moving away from the punk sound. This is a pretty good rock record and in fact there are very faint moments of some rockabilly. Anyway another great album and this one gets 9/10.

Standouts: Her Black Wings, Tired Of Being Alive, 777

Danzig III: How The Gods Kill- this one is more of the same as the last album and by that I mean it’s still got that hard rock sound going on. If you liked the last record then you’ll definitely enjoy this one. I will say that the guitar riffs/work are also really good too. Sure they are nothing spectacular but they’re simple. I’ll give this one 9.5/10

Standouts: Dirty Black Summer, Left Hand Black, Do You Wear The Mark

Danzig 4- this one I have to say slows things down a bit. The guitars are still pretty decent but this record the songs are slower. I don’t know, I just didn’t enjoy this one as much as the last three so for that I’m giving this one 7/10

Standouts: Brand New God, Stalker Song, Cantspeak

Danzig 5: Blackacidevil- alright so I guess we’re going industrial. I’m not the biggest fan of that kind of music and for this record Jerry Cantrell contributed guitar work here but I couldn’t get into this one. That being said that’s a 0/10

Standouts:

6:66 Satan’s Child- I really wanted to like this album a lot more but again it’s got more industrial stuff going on. I will say it’s slightly better that 5 but not by a lot. So I’ll give this 1/10

Standouts: Five Finger Crawl

777: I Luciferi- alright so we’ve ditched the industrial stuff and gone to a more rock with a bit of metal mixed in. I actually enjoyed this album more than I thought. It’s certainly a step up from the last couple records. The thing about this record is that some of the songs are hit or miss but like I said I enjoyed this one a lot more than the last couple. So for that I’ll give this one 7/10

Standouts: Wicked Pussycat, Kiss The Skull, Naked Witch

Circle Of Snakes- so I had either heard or read the reviews on this one years ago that this record wasn’t very good. I happened to think that this one isn’t as bad as people say it is. It’s definitely not like 5 or 6 and it continues where 777 left off basically. I’ll give this one 5.5/10

Standouts: Skincarver, My Darkness, Black Angel White Angel

Deth Red Sabaoth- so I remember Glenn Danzig being on the Full Metal Jackie show and he was promoting this one. All I remember him saying about this record was that it was his first in a long time and how to pronounce the name. It’s not a brilliant record by any means but it’s kind like Circle Of Snakes. I guess on one hand you could say he played it safe and didn’t try anything new but on the other hand he didn’t go back to that industrial sound. So for that I’m giving this one 5/10

Standouts: The Revengeful, Black Candy

Skeletons- ah yes the obligatory covers record that bands release. When it comes to covers albums a band can do it right like Slayer and Rage Against The Machine or some can fall flat like Children Of Bodom and Ozzy. This one is definitely the latter. I think maybe there were not ideas left so Danzig decided to record and release this. I don’t know I just couldn’t get into this one. I’ll give this 1/10 and it’s mostly for the effort.

Standouts:

Black Laden Crown- not sure what to make of this one. Most of it is instrumental and when the songs that have vocals on them play, they’re just average. That’s just what this record is average. For that this gets 2/10

Standouts: Devil On Hwy 9, Eyes Ripping Fire

Sings Elvis- I have heard Glenn Danzig referred to as Evil Elvis and yes he does have the range to sing Elvis songs so I guess it was a matter of time before he put out an album full of Elvis songs. Now I’m not sure if it was his voice or the mastering but I did not enjoy this one. I’m sure that there are some who will think this is brilliant and unique but I just don’t care for this. He doesn’t sound like a carbon copy of Elvis but I just thought he’d do a better job. If I had to choose between this and The Misfits covers album I’d definitely choose The Misfits record. I’m giving this 0/10

Standouts:

When it comes down to it, this is a very inconsistent catalog. You’ve got some really good records, some average and some downright terrible. Now I’ve seen both Danzig and The Misfits live and trust me, The Misfits are much better. Now some will compare the two but you really can’t as both bands sound different.

Final Grade: B+
