Song Pick Of The Week: Dissection- Night’s Blood

If you were to ask me what country has the best metal, my automatic response would be Sweden.  There’s just something about that part of the world that produces such great bands. Best part is no two bands sound the same!!  This of course leads to Song Pick Of The Week and in at number 63/100 is the blackened death metal band Dissection and the song “Night’s Blood.”  Let’s take a look…….

I’d say even before I became a fan of bands like Behemoth or Dark Funeral, I really got into Dissection. Of course it was at a time where I was really into anything from Sweden and you can’t deny that the album Storm Of The Light’s Bane is an absolute masterpiece. It’s just such a perfect album from start to finish and I remember walking from The Key Club in LA to Amoeba Music and purchasing it. “Night’s Blood” is what opens the album and what an opener!!  When it starts you know that your ears are in for greatness!!  If you ask me, this particular song isn’t like your average black metal song. For one thing, the recording doesn’t sound as if a Casio recorder was used and you can actually understand vocalist Jon Nödtveidt. There’s also a sort of epicness about this song too.  “Night’s Blood” would first be performed at the 1997 Wacken Open Air Festival and was recorded for what would become the live album “Live Legacy” however, due to recording issues, wasn’t included. There is a bootleg of the same performance called Frozen At Wacken that does include “Night’s Blood” which has become a rare find. This song is a reason why I actually prefer black metal from Sweden instead of Norway which is where this type of music originated. Storm Of The Light’s Bane was released in 1997 and would be their last album until 2006.  This was because vocalist/guitarist Jon Nödtveidt was arrested and jailed for murder and in 2006, he committed suicide.  If you are wanting to get into black metal and don’t want to start with the crappy recordings that so many of these bands are known for, maybe start with this song and album. The whole album is considered a masterpiece.
