The Go-Gos

Up next on the chopping block is a band that is another one of those where I feel like they have more singles than albums. Or maybe I’m just thinking of their hits I don’t know.  The band on the chopping block is The Go-Go’s and I really don’t know much about them other than their popular songs so with that, let’s take a look…………..

Beauty And The Beat- this album while being a pop album kinda has a hint of new wave. Now this is the album that gave us the songs Our Lips Are Sealed and We Got The Beat (any time I listen to that song I want to watch the movie Fast Times At Ridgemont High) but overall this is just a really fun album. The songs are catchy and they have some pretty good hooks and I’m gonna go ahead and give this one 9/10.

Standouts: Tonite, Skidmarks On My Heart, Can’t Stop The World

Vacation- I feel like this one’s more just a straightforward pop album with a little bit of punk and even some surf rock mixed in. This is the album that gave us that song Vacation (and I always think of that episode of It’s Always Sunny where they go to the Jersey shore) but aside from that it’s another really fun album nothing special just overall a fun album. I’ll give this 8.5/10

Standouts: We Don’t Get Along, Cool Jerk, Beatnik Beach

Sunplaza Hotel Tokyo 1982- this is a live album and I gotta say live albums can either be really good or just be kind of mediocre in terms of capturing that live sound and unfortunately, this one is the latter. I mean it’s not a bad performance, but just the mixing and the mastering just isn’t great and it’s probably not an album of theirs. I would go back and revisit.  It almost has a bootleg type of sound maybe if they had released it after the third album it might have sounded better, but it’s hard to say.  Anyway I’m gonna give this 7/10.

Standouts: Tonite, How Much More, Get Up And Go

Talk Show- there are pop albums and then there are pop rock albums. This one goes for more of a pop and it’s even a little slower compared to the other albums. This is the album that gave us the single Head Over Heels and as far as the rest, the album goes, it’s a worthy follow up, but don’t expect it to have that kind of pop punk sound.  I’m giving this one 8/10

Standouts: Beneath The Blue Sky, Yes Or No, I’m With You

God Bless The Go-Go’s- OK so I guess this was their newest album after 17 years of not being around and I gotta say so. It doesn’t sound like they really ever broke up.  No I will say that compared to the three other albums it is probably their softest.  If you’re looking for songs like We Got The Beat or anything like that you’re not gonna find songs like that on this album.  It is a little too bad that this would be their last album because it would be interesting to hear what they sound like now in the year 2025.  I’m gonna go ahead and give this 8.5/10.

Standouts: Unforgiven, Kissing Asphalt, Stuck In My Car

For a band that has such a short catalogue they really do have some fun albums.  It’s easy to see why their hits became such big hits because as I said about their problems, they’re fun.  I would like to see how they are live because I’m willing to bet that they put on a really fun show.  But aside from their hits the rest of their song they’re also great and quite catchy.  Definitely a great band and a band that is more than just their hits.

Final Grade: B+
