Up next on the chopping block is another mixed bag review. Now with the last mixed bag review, these are bands who have only released one album. And like the last mixed bag review, there is no album ranking. So here we go……
Them Crooked Vultures/Them Crooked Vultures- so this is a supergroup consisting of Josh Homme on vocals and guitar, Dave Grohl on drums , and John Paul Jones on bass. I will say that in terms of the sound, it has that Queens Of The Stone Age sound going for it but with a kind of Zeppelin kind of vibe. I remember when this came out and KROQ was promoting the hell out of this group and who can blame them. Overall, this is just a great rock record made by some of rocks best musicians. It’s got rock, a little bit of funk, a bit of bluegrass, and some cool riffs. I give it 9.5/10
Standouts: Mind Eraser, No Chaser, Reptiles, Warsaw or the First Breath You Take After You Give Up
Sex Pistols/ Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols- arguably one of the most influential albums ever in punk rock. I mean there’s no question that this album is a classic. I mean countless bands have cited this album as a big influence and it’s easy to see why. I mean Anarchy in the U.K. is one of the most popular songs ever. Aside from that song and God Save the Queen, this album is actually really good. Most early punk music is just ok and punk to me is more about the attitude than the music but this album is an exception. It’s not just a bunch of kids making noise. I give this 10/10
Standouts: Pretty Vacant, Bodies, Liar
Scour/Scour/Red- so this one is different not only for the kind of music. First off this is a review of two EP’s. Secondly, this is my first review of a black metal band. Now for those who don’t know, this is Phil Anselmo’s black metal band. Yes the same Phil Anselmo who was the vocalist for Pantera, Down, and Superjoint Ritual. This band also has members from Cattle Decapitation, Pig Destroyer, and Animosity. What makes this black metal band different is that Phil uses lower growling vocals instead of the high pitched screaming that is found in most black metal bands. Honestly, you could take both EP’s and put them together to make one great album. And aside from the vocal style, this has all the elements of a great black metal band. I’d even put it up there with bands like Dark Funeral and Emperor. So if you want some great black metal, this is a band to check out. Now if they’d only tour so I can see them live that’d be great. I give this 9/10
Standouts: Piles (from Red), Dispatched (from Scour), Codes (from Scour), Shank (from Red)
One Day as a Lion/ One Day as a Lion- another EP but this one is special because it’s what Zack De La Rocha did after Rage Against The Machine. Now this is not another Rage record or even another record that sounds like them. It’s definitely more of a hip hop record and while I like his voice, there just seems to be something missing like the fact that he needs to be with Tim, Tom, and Brad from Rage Against the Machine. Overall, this isn’t bad but it’s not as good as Rage and yes I know it’s unfair to compare the two but all I hear is that band. Again, it’s not bad but it’s very different and Zack is a very good rapper maybe even one of the best rappers. I give this one 8/10
Standouts: Wild International, If You Fear Dying, Ocean View
Coverdale-Page/Coverdale Page- so if you haven’t heard of this record, then definitely check it out. It’s Jimmy Page and David Coverdale from Whitesnake who made an album together. Now I’m pretty sure people were a little skeptical about this album because of Coverdale’s vocals but they actually fit the record and Page’s guitar complements his voice quite well. Is it the second coming of Led Zeppelin? No it’s not but what we have is something different. And is it just me or does David Coverdale at times sound a little bit like Axl Rose? Anyway, a very underrated record and I give this album 9/10.
Standouts: Feeling Hot, Shake My Tree, Absolution Blues
Probot/Probot- I was saving this one for last and I’ve been wanting to review this album for awhile now. This is the project that Dave Grohl did with various metal singers. At the heart of it, Dave Grohl is a metalhead and he even cites Reign in Blood as one of his favorite albums. This is such a cool project I mean we have songs with Cronos (Venom), Lee Dorian (Cathedral), Max Cavalera, Lemmy, Wino (The Obsessed, Saint Vitus), Kurt Brecht (D.R.I.), King Diamond, and so many more. All the songs are great and unique in their own way. I really love this album and think more people need to hear this album. I mean this is such a badass and diverse record that I have no choice but to give this 10/10
Standouts: Centuries of Sin, Red War, Silent Spring
Again these kind of reviews are meant to showcase and introduce people to these albums. Hopefully you take a listen to these albums because they are all great albums and definitely worth listening to. Anyway, there is no album rankings on these because well it’s impossible to rank different albums from different artists. Anyway check these albums out they are worth it. And yes there will be another one of these.
