This next review I decided to do out of the blue because I was curious about them. That band is The Butthole Surfers. Other than that one song that I heard on the radio back in the day, I don’t really know anything about them. So let’s take a look……..
Psychic……Powerless….Another Man’s Sac- this first album is what can I say weird. It’s all over the place. I mean there’s songs with punk elements, psychedelic, country, and surf rock. Some of the songs don’t even have vocals on them and it sounds like they’re just messing around on their instruments. This is a very weird record. I give it 7/10
Standouts: Cherub, Mexican Caravan, Woly Boly
Rembrandt Pussyhorse- this one is very experimental compared to the last album. There are violins, double drums, pianos, and even a dog barking on one of the songs as well as recorded stuff on tape added into the songs. This one is even weirder than the previous album. I guess I’ll give this 7/10
Standouts: American Woman, Mark Says Alright, Tornadoes
Locust Abortion Technician- while not as experimental as the previous record, is still a weird record. This one has more elements of punk, psychedelic, and even some rock elements in it. So far, this one also has noise rock mixed into it as well. Another strange album. I give it 7/10
Standouts: Sweat Loaf, Kuntz, 22 going on 23
Hairway to Steven- I guess I would say out of all their records so far, this one seems to be their most listenable. There are still the dueling drums and the usual amount of guitars and bass however, there is also a lot of use of acoustic guitars. There are ,ore songs on here with vocals. I give this one 8/10
Standouts: I Saw An X-Ray of a Girl Passing Gas, Julio Iglesias, Fast
Pioughd- on this one, it would seem that they have strayed away from their psychedelic sound that was dominant on the previous albums. Of all the records so far, this one is more straight forward because it’s mostly guitars, bass, drums, and keyboards. This one is probably the least weird album that I’ve heard so far from these guys. I give it 8/10
Standouts: Golden Showers, The Hurdy Gurdy Man, Revolution Part 2
Independent Worm Saloon- this one seems to be the most straight forward album in terms of sound. There aren’t as much keyboards on here and again it’s mostly guitars, bass, and drums. This record is also the longest record so far with most of the others clocking in at around 35/40 minutes, this one is about an hour or so. While the songs are still weird, this is probably the most cohesive album so far. I give it 8/10
Standouts: Who Was In My Room Last Night, Some Dispute Over T-Shirt Sales, Dancing Fool
Electriclarryland- this is when I and a lot of people I know heard about this band with the song Pepper being played on the radio. This record is definitely a rock record I would say it’s their most accessible record. Compared to earlier albums, this one Is probably their most “normal” record. This record came out in 1996 and it would be their last until 2001. A very weird but very solid release. I give this 9/10
Standouts: Pepper, Birds, Ah Ha
Weird Revolution- their first record after five years goes has elements of modern noise rock as well as regular rock. I guess this one is a re-recorded album called After the Astronaut which was scrapped in 1998. This one also has electronic elements in it with a big emphasis on keyboards like in previous releases. While the last record was not as weird, this one is weirder but not as bad as other albums. I give it 8/10
Standouts: Dracula From Houston, They Came In, The Weird Revolution
Well I must say that this was the weirdest review I’ve done. I didn’t realize that these guys have been around since 1984 or that they had this many albums and are still active. I will say that the name is funny and after googling it I found I found out that when an announcer forgot what the band was called and used the song title for the group’s name. Again a very weird and strange band but definitely worth checking out.
