Show Review: Crypta 2025/08/24

So last night, I was very fortunate to go see the death metal band Crypta on their second headlining tour at The Whiskey in LA. Now they have headlined this venue before and while I had a great time at that show, there was just something that felt different about this one.  I’m not exactly sure what it was, but it just felt more organized and like everybody had their shit together.  For those that are not too familiar with this band it’s basically four ladies from Brazil two of which were in the (just as badass) band Nervosa. The nice thing about a band like this is that they still play in small places and you really don’t get much smaller than a venue like The Whiskey.

Now I will say that bassist and vocalist Fernanda Lira absolutely commands the stage. Her stage presence and energy is massive and you can just tell that she is so happy to be doing what she’s doing.  She’s very engaging and moves around and is absolutely badass.  Both guitar players Taina Bergamaschi and (touring guitar player) Victoria Villareal complimented each other very well and had great chemistry. Drummer Luana Dametto (who is shorter than me) is such a bad ass drummer and when you are up close, you can really tell how great she is even more so. Doors opened at six and the first band was on at 6:30 and by 10:40 they took the stage and immediately went into the song The Other Side Of Anger which is a great opening song. Now they only have two albums and they did a pretty good job of balancing out the set list. They played a lot of my favorite songs and seeing them at that small of a venue being against the stage and being that up-close just made it that much more special.  It was just one blistering track after another until they finally closed with the last song off the first album From The Ashes.

I would be remiss if I didn’t at least mention some of the openers and for this tour, they brought out another Brazilian metal band called Claustrofobia (that’s not a misprint that’s how it’s spelled) and they were fine to me. They were like your typical death metal band, but they were fun.  For this particular venue, a lot of local bands get added to open and the first band Inviscera (from Corona) was up first. They’re a really young band and they definitely have a lot of potential. I’ve seen a good amount of younger bands open shows and these guys were no different.  They did play about 3 to 4 covers and a couple of originals, but the covers were interesting because they covered songs from bands like Death and Acid Bath. I think if they keep at, they have the potential to be really great.  The other local band that I want to give a shout out to is a band called Vexxum from West Covina. They were more on the thrashier side of things but they were just a lot of fun. They were energetic and engaging and overall just an absolute blast to see.  So if you have the chance or are looking for some local LA talent definitely give the bands Inviscera and Vexxum a listen.

Crypta is one of those bands that I will always try to go see anytime I have the opportunity to do so. They’re that good and there’s a reason why they are so high up on my list of favorite bands.  This was one of those shows that afterwards it made me like them even more.  Hopefully they’ll be back sooner rather than later, but if you have not had the chance to go see them and you are a fan of this kind of music go see them.  They put on one hell of a show and are some of the nicest people you will ever meet.
