Great Performances On TV- The Smashing Pumpkins: Tarantula

When I first started doing Rewind Reviews, one of the first bands that I put back on The Chopping Block was The Smashing Pumpkins and to this day, they are one of the very few bands whose albums I could not rank.  I still can’t rank their albums because they’re all just so damn good!!  While I was browsing YouTube the other day, I came across their performance of the song “Tarantula” live on Letterman and I thought to myself “now that is a Great Performance!”  Let’s take a look……..

There was a time when I absolutely could not stand the Smashing Pumpkins.  I thought Billy‘s voice was a little too nasally and I thought they were just kind of whatever and really didn’t give them much of a thought. Thanks largely in part to certain people I have become a much bigger fan of this band and if you have not seen this band live,  do not miss them. Now this performance of the song “Tarantula,” is off the very underrated (and possibly overlooked) album Zeitgeist.  What really makes this performance special is that this was on July 9, 2007 and Zeitgeist was released the next day. Of course the song was released prior to the album’s release and was performed live as well (according to what I was able to look up it was first premiered on May 22, 2007 in Paris, France).  As I’ve said, Zeitgeist is definitely one of those underrated and overlooked Smashing Pumpkins albums and what’s great about being able to look up great performances like this is it satisfies one’s curiosity about how these songs sound live.
