That One Time: Miley Cyrus And Metallica

Ever since I’ve sort of stepped out of my metal only bubble, I have to say listening to music has been infinitely better. I feel like that’s the problem with a lot of metal heads.  A lot of them can be so close minded and there honestly really is no pleasing some people especially those that listen to metal.  Lately I’ve had a greater appreciation for singers like Miley Cyrus.  Now does anybody remember That One Time when she and Metallica were on the Howard Stern show??? It doesn’t really matter whether you do or not let’s take a look……….

So in the course of going beyond my comfort zone, there are certain bands that I listen to differently, and Metallica is definitely one of them. If you read my rewind review of them, you’ll see that my thoughts on their albums have drastically changed.  Now when it comes to the song “Nothing Else Matters,” I honestly think that it is incredibly overplayed and it really is one of my least favorite songs. Now that being said, when they performed it on the Howard Stern show with Miley Cyrus, I gotta say it definitely gave that song a different life.  I don’t want to say that it gave it new life because I feel like that’s always in their set list but hearing a singer like Miley just makes it sound so different.  I firmly believe that if Miley Cyrus wrote a rock record, it would do so incredibly well. Remember, if you can look past the Hannah Montana stuff and all of the weird crazy antics that she was into a few years ago she really is a very, very talented singer.  I mean, I even reviewed her album Plastic Hearts and I’ll still listen to that album every now and then. But back to her and Metallica.  Hearing someone with her vocal style, really puts a different spin on an already massive hit.  You wouldn’t think that this would work, but it absolutely is one of those moments where it shouldn’t work, but it does. Couple that with her and James harmonizing on the vocals and it really does take it to a whole new level.  I do remember hearing it on the way into work on SiriusXM and at the time I was like “what the hell is this?” but now I actually think it’s so damn good!! I would seriously encourage those that are maybe on the fence about this to go back and watch the video on YouTube. She does a great job and let’s also not forget that she was asked to do this by Metallica.  I never thought I would see the day where I would actually enjoy Miley Cyrus but you know here we are.
