Alright so after two indie rock bands it’s time for a cleanser and so I decided to do another mixed bag review. So let’s take a look……..
Street Sweeper Social Club: Street Sweeper Social Club- ok so this is a band that has Boots Riley (The Coup) and Tom Morello and I gotta say that the best way to describe this one would be Rage Against The Machine lite. It’s very reminiscent of Rage Against The Machine and I could see a lot of these songs on a Rage record. It’s not bad but when this came out I could see someone listening to this to get their Rage fix. It’s fine but honestly if I’m gonna listen to something like this, I’ll just put on a Rage record. I’ll give it 8/10
Standouts: 100 Little Curses, Fight Smash Win, Somewhere In The World It’s Midnight
Killer Be Killed: Killer Be Killed, Reluctant Hero- this is a supergroup consisting of Troy Sanders (Mastodon), Greg Puciato (Dillinger Escape Plan), Max Cavalera (Soulfly), and Ben Koller (Converge). They have two albums and these are both absolutely badass records. I guess you could take elements from all these guys current bands and kinda Frankenstein them together. The first record is very much like that and the second record Reluctant Hero is possible slightly more melodic but either way, both records are great and I highly recommend checking them out and I’ll give both records 9/10
Standouts:
S/T- Wings Of Feather and Wax, Snakes Of Jehovah, Fire To Your Flag
Reluctant Hero- Deconstructing Self Destruction, Dream Gone Bad, Inner Calm From Outer Storms
Mother Love Bone: Apple- I definitely get a 90’s vibe listening to this record. Now I have only heard of this band and their one album is pretty damn good. It’s definitely what I would call a grunge album but that’s what was popular at that time. It’s too bad the singer died of a drug overdose shortly before this was released because they definitely could’ve made a lot of great albums. I’ll give it 9/10
Standouts: This Is Shangrila, Stargazer, Captain Hi-Top
Spiritbox: Eternal Blue- this is one of those bands that you hear about or discover through social media (at least that’s how I found out about them). I’d say if you haven’t heard this album and you’re a fan of bands like Deftones then you will really enjoy this album. I wasn’t expecting as much clean vocals on here but it fits. I think that Courtney LaPlante has a great voice and her vocals definitely fit the music. Definitely a different kind of metal album and I’m curious to hear what they do on the next album. I’ll give it 9/10
Standouts: Holy Roller, Hurt You, Halcyon
Better Lovers: Highly Irresponsible- another Greg Puciato except this band also has members from Every Time I Die and Fit For An Autopsy. I gotta say I freaking love this album. It’s definitely a Dillinger meets Every Time I Die band and it’s great. This to me is one of those albums that sounds like it could’ve been after the last ETID record or Dillinger Record. Now I was supposed to see them at this year’s Aftershock festival but due to things beyond my control, I only heard them playing the last song as I was walking in so I am very much looking forward to seeing them properly. I’m definitely giving this one 10/10
Standouts: A White Horse Covered In Blood, Your Misplaced Self, Everything Was Put Here For Me
