When it comes to death metal, Sweden definitely knows how to do it right. Much like in the U.S. with the Big 4 of thrash (Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax), Sweden has a Big 4 of death metal that being Entombed, Unleashed, Grave, and Dismember. Now for those that are real,it to the aforementioned bands, Remember That One Time when Entombed performed at the Swedish Grammys?? Let’s take a look…….
Out of the big four of Swedish death metal, Entombed are the ones that were the most experimental. Now they didn’t stray too far away from the death metal sound, however while not only being pioneers of Swedish death metal, they are also largely responsible for the sub genre known as death n roll which of course is combining hard rock with death metal. This particular performance is at the 2002 Swedish Grammys and the song that they played was “Chief Rebel Angel” off of the Morning Star album. What makes this performance unique is that it has back up ballet dancers. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like this with this particular type of music. It’s a very interesting performance because this is something you would normally see with pop artists and not death metal bands. You wouldn’t think that having ballet dancers dancing to Swedish death metal wouldn’t work, but it surprisingly does. The lyrics for song “Chief Rebel Angel” are based largely in part by the 1997 film The Devils Advocate and it’s one of their best songs off of a very underrated album.
