Gojira

There are certain bands out there that no matter what, people will never have a bad thing to say about.  An example would be say Pantera. That brings me to the next band up on the chopping block and that band is Gojira. Now I’ve seen them before when they opened for Trivium and Lamb Of God back in like 2007. I remember thinking they were pretty good so let’s take a look…….

Terra Incognita-  I would say that this has a little bit of everything in it. And by that I mean it’s got a little bit of Metallica, Tool, and Pantera and for a debut album, it actually sounds pretty tight. It’s got melodic parts as well as some great riffs. There are a couple of repetitive moments but overall, it’s a good first album. That’s definitely a 9/10

Standouts: Satan Is A Lawyer, Space Time, In The Forest

The Link- the one major thing that stands out are the drums. Like they are really good on here and the guitar tone on here is also really good too. I actually like the vocals better on the last album a little better but that’s just me. Anyway, this is definitely a worthy follow up and I’ll give this one 9/10

Standouts: Indians, Death Of Me, The Link

From Sirius To Mars- I think this was my introduction to these guys and this is definitely a monster of an album. This has a little bit of everything and more. The guitars and drums are great as well as the vocals being on point.  If you’re going to start with this band, then this is where I would.  I think it’s definitely safe to say that this is getting a 10/10.

Standouts: Ocean Planet, Flying Whales, To Sirius

The Way Of All Flesh- you can’t really say that this one sounds a lot like the last album because so far their albums are all pretty unique. One thing that does stand out here is that Randy Blythe does guest vocals on the song Adoration For None which is pretty badass. Now they do tend to,go back and forth with the slower songs to the faster songs but I enjoyed this one. I’ll give this 9/10

Standouts: Adoration For None, Oroborus, Toxic Garbage Island

L’Enfant Sauvage- now while the band itself is awesome, I actually found this one to be kind of boring. I feel like they slowed down too much on here. This was one of those albums that I was hoping to end soon. I’m giving this one a very generous 2/10

Standouts: The Gift Of Guilt

Magma- I really wanted to like this one a lot more.  Now I’m not saying that this one is bad and in fact it’s not nearly as bad as the previous record but I was hoping for something more. I like my death metal to be faster. Now I’m sure some will say that they are different and trying to stand out but as I have said before when it comes to metal, I don’t mind the slower melodic stuff but there needs to be a balance. Anyway, there are some really great songs and some that are just ok. I’ll give this one 7/10

Standouts:  Stranded, Silvera, The Cell

Fortitude- This one to me has a better balance of the melodic stuff and the fast stuff. I actually get some Mastodon vibes from this one too. Now I know this came out last year but if you’re looking for a great album that came out in 2021, then you might want to give this a listen. I’ll give this 8/10

Standouts: Born For One Thing, Another World, Sphinx

So when it comes to Gojira, yes they are unique and different. Do I think they are overhyped? A little yes. However, when I saw them live, they were really good (not better than Lamb Of God good). If you are looking for a death metal band that’s different then definitely check these guys out.
